How had Basilisk got its name?

Post by Mæstro » 2026-01-24, 20:01

I know the name and branding antedate BasiliskDev taking over development, but I am curious to why the name was chosen in the first place. A friend suggested it might have been named after Roko’s.

It was very much a public and community thing. There was a lot of back and forth discussion as well as voting. A different logo entry actually won the vote but the name was ultimately my own entry; my rationale was explained in the linked thread. I was fine with any other entries to be fleshed out too, but this is what happened back in 2017.

By the way, did you know that, according to the ancients (Saint Isidore, Pliny), a weasel was the only thing that could kill a basilisk?
Reminds me of Iceweasel, and, even more, Iceweasel-UXP, because of its relation with the Basilisk browser (although it didn't have any deadly aim).
