Basilisk 2024.10.24 Released!

Unread post by Basilisk-Dev » 2024-10-23, 15:40

Basilisk 2024.10.24 has been released!

This release uses the same UXP platform version as Pale Moon 33.4.0.1. The UXP commit hash is 89e88ca6a0.

As of this release, we now release source code archives with each Basilisk release to avoid any issues or concerns with MPL compliance. Please see the downloads page for more information on how to download source code archives.

The autoupdate service does not currently support FreeBSD and macOS builds so a manual update is required on these operating systems.

See the release notes for more information.

See the downloads page to download the update.

The ‘ghostbuster’ functionality from the latest version of Pale Moon will be included in the next release of Basilisk. I intentionally did not port it into this version to allow time to ensure the feature’s stability.

Just updated. Everything is good so far.

P. S. The “implementation notes” concerning the new prefs are missing in the release notes.

Thanks for the heads up. I've updated it.

Speaking of that devil, could the next release please include a manual "Check for updates" somewhere in a drop-menu?

It does. It's under Help->About Basilisk. Pale Moon and Firefox also have the same functionality in the same location.

a manual "Check for updates"
It's under Help->About Basilisk.
The behavior of “About Basilisk” will vary depending on the pref you checked in Preferences → Advanced → Update:

•“Automatically install updates”: If you go to Help → About Basilisk it will immediately check for updates, without the need (or even the presence) of the button “Check for updates”;
•“Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them”: Same as above;
•“Never check for updates”: If you go to Help → About Basilisk there will be the “Check for updates” button.

I would like that button to always be present regardless of my update preference. (An about:config setting would be fine.)

I don't think this is correct. if you have check but choose, then the button should be there. Only "automatic" will not show the button as it will automatically download.

Hmm, but in the case you didn’t choose to never check, going to “About Basilisk” will trigger the check anyway.

I just tested it and the “Check for updates” button didn’t show up. Maybe in case there is a update then it will show a button to install it? Or I’m doing something wrong?

Yup, that should be the behaviour. If there's an update you get a button to install it.

The reason I requested this is because said automatic "trigger" was broke several updates back (August, IIRC), and the application would neither update nor let the user know that one was available, and checking About didn't coax it either. (You had to manually DL a new installer.)

Not sure if this is what you are referring to, but in early September there was an issue with DNS records not properly pointing to the autoupdate server. That has been resolved. In that scenario autoupdates would not have been detected regardless of if there was a button to force an update check or not.

On Intel x86_64 it should run on all versions of MacOS from 10.7 Lion up to the current version.

On Apple Silicon it should work on all released versions of the OS for that hardware platform.

Is there any actively developed Firefox forks for those OSes that use so-called "modern" web-extensions?

There was a fork called “Firefox Legacy,” but updates stopped after Firefox 108.

Another option is a fork of Roytam1’s Serpent 55 browser, available here: https://jazzzny.me/projects/interweb/

Neither of these browsers is recommended. Firefox Legacy is no longer maintained, and Interweb is based on an outdated version of Basilisk. If you need support for Interweb, please refrain from seeking it here.
