If you've used Distrobox before, what was your impression of how much overhead it added to the use of any particular tool? (drive-space increase I don't care about, ram usage increase I very much care about, and performance hits I moderately care about)
I have not used Distrobox, but I have used a similar technology called Bedrock Linux which allows you to run something like Mint with another distro like Arch on top of it, and use both their repos together at the same time. The memory usage overhead was nothing, but it takes a lot of terminal commands and configuring things to get it working right. Not for the point-and-clickers.

While it may seem "easy" to the early-adopter command-line types, at some point in the probably not-to-distant future (if not arguably happening already), there will be a mass influx of new users
There already has been a huge influx of new users in the past 4-5 years. Seems mainly because of Steam and Proton and the different things that let people game. With the Steamdeck using Arch, that influx seems to be getting larger. Windows and NTFS have a pretty significant performance penalty, and gaming on Mac is almost non-existent.
