How to start Basilisk in GNU LInux Trisquel ?

Unread post by puppyX » 2023-03-08, 13:39

I downloaded the latest Basilisk browser and the SHA256 checksum checked out ok with GtkHash. Have uncompressed the tar.xz into the home folder. How can the browser be started ?
I can't seem to see the correct executable file to run the browser.

Hello puppyX,

there is a file basilisk (without ending) when you unpack the files.
To start the Basilisk browser you have to make the file executable (see screenshot - i'm on Ubuntu Mate).

Then you can start the browser by double click on the file basilisk.

This file is already marked as executable in the tar file, you should be able to just click the basilisk executable without doing that.

When the basilisk file is clicked it only shows 'Could not display'...

Ah, okay. This happens because the MIME type detection in your Linux distro is outdated and does not properly detect position independent executables as executable binaries. On basically any Linux distro that's has had its MIME type detection updated in the past 5 years it works properly.

I suggest opening a bug with the Trisquel devs or if there is a newer update available for Trisquel then updating to that newer version.

I've got Trisquel 11 Mini on this machine, and Basilisk is working either by clicking the icon in the file manager or by going in the terminal to the folder and typing './basilisk'. You might want to try it from the terminal.
