App menu problem

Unread post by JFReg » 2023-03-06, 20:03

Since the update Basilisk 2023.03.04, I have a problem with the app menu. On start, everything is as usual. But as soon as I open any webpage or a new tab, the menu pops up just for a moment on the left side of the browser and vanishes immediately. Under the app menu, there is only the Customize - Help - Close line of the menu. I tried both the portable version and installer version on Win 10 22H2.

Are you using any custom themes or does it happen with the default one? Try switching to the default theme if not doing so already.

@JFReg: No problems seen here with Basilisk's App Menu running either Basilisk v2023.03.04 or latest v2023.03.05 :)

Tested Basilisk v2023.03.04 and today's v2023.03.05 running on both Win10 (v22H2) and on Win7. Tested on both Windows OS' using my default Basilisk profile (several extensions + CSS userstyles)... and then on a new 'out-of-the-box' profile. No issues.

BTW - Latest Basilisk is now recorded at v2023.03.05 ... a second update issued early today (Monday) to correct previous auto-update 'version display' issues on Windows... see Basilisk-Dev's post: viewtopic.php?f=61&t=29543&p=237396#p237386

Sounds as if you might have had a failed/corrupted update to v2023.03.04... but that possibility doesn't fit very well with your comment "I tried both the portable version and installer version on Win 10 22H2." :?

Edit - Updated my Win10 installation to Win10 v22H2... and no problems with Basilisk's App Menu. Not a compatibility problem. :) On the offchance this is a Win10 v22H2 compatibility problem... you may be able to try running Basilisk in a 'Compatibility Mode'... see jsher2000's 'For other readers' instructions in this SUMO Q&A: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1367294

FWIW - I had a 'hiccup/hang/stop' in a download from Basilisk update server this morning (Mon) when updating my Win7 machine to v2023.03.04... the updater download failed/stopped only half complete... don't know cause or which end the connection problem was? Cancelled built-in updater and instead downloaded the full offline .exe Windows 64-bit installer for v2023.03.04... checked the integrity of the new .exe installer file by comparing SHA256 file checksum generated against the checksum listed on the Basilisk download page...and then did an old-style 'over-the-top' update to v2023.03.04 by running the new .exe installer file from my desktop. Update successful.

Suggest a test of your current Basilisk v2023.03.04 installation by starting a clean profile and seeing if your strange App Menu corruption problems persist on that? Consider doing a full reinstall if your App Menu problems persist on the clean profile?

You were likely updating at the exact time that I disabled the update server so I could upload the 2023.03.05 update for Windows builds.

I am using the custom theme, but there is no effect when I switch to Carbon light oder Linen Light.

Thank you for the question! The problem resulted from uBlock Origin which I had moved to the app menu. The problem is resolved if either I disable uBlock or move it back to the navbar.

Interesting. This does not happen for me even if I move uBlock Origin to the app menu.

Can confirm that moving the toolbar button of uBlock Origin (v1.16.4.30) from a toolbar into the App Menu dropdown 'Overflow Panel' does cause the strange App Menu corruption problems OP JFReg described above. This occurs on both Win7 and Win10.

However, very happy here to leave the extremely useful uBlock Origin toolbar button available on the Nav Bar. :)

I am going to release new builds where this issue should be fixed. It was caused by this commit https://repo.palemoon.org/Basilisk-Dev/ ... 853d8ef922

@Basilisk-Dev: Many thanks for prompt responses. :D Had nearly finished making short video of UBO toolbar button corrupting App Menu when placed in Overflow Panel... had to download OBS Studio update... and then try to remember how to use it! What fun. :)

Hope the 'Fade out tab label on overflow instead of ellipsis' commit can make a return idc... IMO it is a very neat improvement to the tab title text fadeout.

This issue should be fixed now in the latest Basilisk release.

I agree, I'd like to re-implement this in the future in a way that does not break compatibility with tab-related addons.
