Website Access Denied Question

Unread post by rodndtube » 2021-02-01, 21:08

I was trying to order some tax forms and publications :( I went through the entire process identifying and updating the IRS cart checkout, then my mailing address info, etc., then pressed the Order Pubs and Forms button and this is what I received (shown below). This has also happened intermittently on a financial company during log-in attempts. So I went to Chrome and placed the documents order.

Afterwards, I went through and changed some Basilisk settings such as "Allow Pop-ups Exception" and "Allow sites to store cookies and site data | Always Allow" and this time the request went through after always rejecting.

Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://apps.irs.gov/app/taxmat/OrderProcessing.jsp" on this server.

99% of the cases this is an arbitrary check on your user agent string. "Unrecognized" UAs will be denied access.

Is there a way to incorporate a universal UA in the standard configuration of Basilisk?

My experience using Basilisk in ordering IRS forms and pubs where I could add some to the checkout bucket, continue to learn about other needed forms, instructions and pubs, add them to the checkout bucket, and repeat, and then fill our my delivery form, was much better until the rejection notice at the end. Chrome was a lot more "work" during the process but finalized the order without failure. I did have to manually fill the address info blocks (whereas Paste Email Add-on works very easily in Basilisk, an additional step in Firefox, and I haven't used it in Chrome).

You can install PermissionsPlus which among other things lets you specify a site specific UA override in the page info dialog for a given website.

Can you recommend a specific UA for a Win10 Pro 64bit machine using Basilisk 64bit?
How would you suggest changing it from the one below and why?

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0

This appears like it will work. For some reason the Add-on/Extension SSUA Override (Sasuga) stopped working.

Thanks in advance.

It's a matter of trying different ones, for the most part the built in overrides work and I've not had to change anything for others.
For instance, the default one for Google in about:config is

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE% rv:71.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/71.0 PaleMoon/28.17.0
Whatever UA you use, it's a good idea to specify %OS_SLICE% so that it will be substituted with the correct OS info. Tweak the Firefox version with older ones and see if it helps.

I am having the same problem with the IRS "order forms by mail" site in both Basilisk and the latest PM..

I added these two UA's, but they did not work.

general.useragent.override.irs.gov Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE% rv:71.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/99.9 PaleMoon/29.0.0

general.useragent.override.apps.irs.gov Mozilla/5.0 (%OS_SLICE% rv:71.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/99.9 PaleMoon/29.0.0

I'm missing something, but I don't know what?

Scott, the other thing I did to get it working was to modify a couple of settings in Menu | Tools | Preferences

Content | Pop-Ups (which I have checked) | Exceptions and added https://apps.irs.gov

and

Privacy | History | Allow Sites to Store Cookies and Site Data (also checked) | Exceptions and added https://apps.irs.gov

You might try just modifying Pop-Ups first as that seems to affect many websites that seemingly have invisible pop-ups. Or something in the pop-up coding interferes. Hope that helps.

I tried both exceptions and nothing in both Basilisk and PM..

Scott

P.S.

I just noticed something strange about that error message...

It says "HTTP:||.." You don't have permission to access "http://apps.irs.gov/app/taxmat/OrderProcessing.jsp" on this server.
Not "HTTPS:\\.." https://apps.irs.gov/app/taxmat/OrderProcessing.jsp

Also try with https://www.irs.gov/

I tried and the IRS is back to its nastiness:

Access Denied

The other website that was problematic is working.

Still not having any luck getting ANY UA change to work. This is what I have now:

general.useragent.override.apps.irs.gov Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/90.0
general.useragent.override.irs.gov Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/80.0

For both of them I have gone as low as Firefox/50.0 and as high as Firefox/90.0. Nothing works.

I sent the IRS an email, but not expecting a reply.

Any ideas?

You have to make sure to also update the rv: number, which is the gecko version number (equal to Firefox version in Firefox's case). It's likely they only accept EXACT known Firefox UAs.

The one financial site has been having this intermittent problem. I noticed that the website has this statement at the top of the page coding but don't know what the implications might be. This morning neither Basilisk or current version of Firefox would log-in, but Chrome did.

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge"/>

The error message is (xxxx are mine):

Access Denied
You don't have permission to access "http://signon.xxxx.org/siteminderagent/forms/xxxx.fcc" on this server.

I'm curious about something...

The address in the address bar says "https://apps.irs.gov/app/taxmat/OrderProcessing.jsp"

But the address in the error message says "http://apps.irs.gov/app/taxmat/OrderProcessing.jsp

I wonder if that's just a coincidence that the "HTTP's" are different? Shouldn't they BOTH be HTTPS..?

The same thing I noticed on my financial site. The same thing often happens in Firefox. Edge and Chrome have not had this problem. When I spoke to people from my financial institution they said it was a bug in Firefox but would not tell what the bug is nor would they contact Firefox to fix it.
