Youtube black screen v2020.03.04

Hi there,

after updating Basilisk I got a black screen on YouTube (video). Audio works.

I have the old layout on Youtube again.

Just tested it in Basilisk and I got this (image below). But after a few seconds, the video started (both video and audio). However, the yellow banner stating the browser will stop being supported, remained.

Not at my place. I only get audio, no video. The yellow banner is with me too.
I installed Basilisk 32 bit.

Try using the new layout.
It's perfectly possible that Google is intentionally making the life of people using the old layout difficult.

I do not believe that. The old layout with audio and video works for me in the old Basilisk version (v2020.01.12).

How can I switch to the new Youtube layout? Any addon?

Maybe there is a mistake in Basilisk with the video?

The new YouTube should be the default, so if you don't have it with the last Basilisk it means that either an extension or an about:config entry is interfering.
Before saying it's a problem with the browser please try the new layout used by YouTube, at least that would rule out compatibility problems with whatever Google is attempting to do.

Not with me. I just tested it on a brand new profile and I keep getting fed the old youtube layout with the yellow banner. Is there a way to force youtube to load the new layout? Google is definitely up to their tricks again.

(@ the OP: even though this started with the new Basilisk version I'm sure it's Google up to their tricks again, going by past histroy.)

Basilisk's current UA override for YouTube is:
general.useragent.override.youtube.com ->>
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/42.0 Basilisk/52.9.2020.03.04
so it's not really a surprise that Basilisk gets the classic interface (since it hasn't yet been taken down).

Changing 42.0 to 62.0 in the string should compel the new layout:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:62.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/62.0 Basilisk/52.9.2020.03.04

@olafmi,
User agent stuff aside... If you happen to have disabled autoplay, see if re-enabling it helps with the "black screen".
I had to enable it to get the player going (in the classic layout).

The new Youtube layout was available in the Basilisk version v2020.02.18. The old YouTube is back after the update to v2020.03.04.

So are you saying you changed the override in about:config and it doesn't work? I changed it and it works for me.

First get rid of any user agen override extensions.
They operate on a global level and end up breaking the more fine-tuned defaults.
If you don't feel comfortable using about:config, install https://addons.basilisk-browser.org/addon/sasuga/ and add an entry for youtube.com (exactly that name, including the .com.)
Then restart the browser and see if it works.

It can be dangerous if it's done carelessly. Here's how to do it. Just go step by step slowly, and verify everything before "clicking."

1) Open the about:config page. If you get the warning page, click what's necessary to get beyond it.

2) In the search bar at top, type "youtube" (minus the quote marks).

3) You'll see 3 options. Look for general.useragent.override.youtube.com (should be the middle option) and double click it.

4) In the "Enter string value" small window that pops up it will read this:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/42.0 Basilisk/52.9.2020.03.04

Change it to this:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:62.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/62.0 Basilisk/52.9.2020.03.04

All you're changing is two digits, the number after "rv:" and "Firefox/" from 42.0 to 62.0 (just like coffeebreak wrote in his post).

(This is what it is in Windows which is what I assume you're using. Mine looks different because I use Linux.)

5) Click the "Ok" button. It should now read the new string under Value and be in bold text (which signifies it has been changed away from the default).

6) You're done. Youtube will now load with the new layout.

Vannilla, the 2020.02.18 release did have the new override -->> newer YT layout.
But for some reason Basilisk-2020.03.04 returned to the previous override that compels the classic layout, so the string does need to be changed.

Oh.. that change must not have been propagated to the new repo. I will fix this but NEXT Basilisk release PLEASE reset the pref to default if you changed it.

For the record I can play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZP-LYrFixE just fine on Youtube Material layout even when not logged in.

thank you moonchild. I see no picture on Youtube only audio works. Now I'm using Basilisk v2020.02.18 because Youtube works.
