Why not using Firefox 56 or Firefox 52 ESR's codebase?

Because neither of those options were good to build a platform off of.
Improving Mozilla code: You know you're on the right track with code changes when you spend the majority of your time deleting code.

56 has rust language locked-in, which is not good for (cross-platform) portability.
