google search not working

Post by SpaceStar1 » 2026-03-15, 06:48

Google search is saying overused service for no reason. Did some change in update code trigger it..
Please fix asap because it is asking for those unbearable picture capchas.
(Firefox ok with bloated search)
btw what is config name/setting that makes Basilisk go to nice basic search?

google search problems can stem from a variety of sources, but in this case it sounds like google objects to either Basilisk, your ISP/VPN/Proxy, or the amount of searches you do. Nothing to do with any changes or "fixes" in Basilisk.

To be entirely sure though, please include the support/troubleshooting information requested. F12 console errors and/or about:support.

Also, like browsers, there are only a handful of actual engines/indexes, but a whole lot of frontends/rebuilds. If you're looking for a google one, try any of these;

Startpage, Presearch, Ask, SearX (not all instances, but most), DogPile, Gibiru, or Kagi.

For Bing frontends;

DDG, Yahoo, Metager , Oscobo, You, Lilo, Qwant, Ecosia, MonsterCrawler, SwissCows, EntireWeb, Petal, ZapMeta, Ekoru, Lycos, Neeva, SearX (Not all instances, but most), DogPile.

For non-google/bing, try; Brave search, Mojeek, Wiby, Stract, Greppr, Marginalia, Yep.

Also, if you are using a VPN or proxy, Google may have blocked the particular VPN server or proxy because of abuse caused by other users of that service.

Ha I just tried startpage and it did their version of same thing:

Your connection has been suspended.
We're sorry for the inconvenience! Our system has detected the type of high-volume traffic coming from your internet connection that is normally associated with bots and scrapers.

So same root of problem. No vpn. I use for one time it happens, like google.

Btw, how do you toggle to script version of google search and back?

Here is info below.

I'll let others comment on any other discrepancies in the troubleshooting information, but for now, NoScript is known bad actor that corrupts profiles and shouldn't be used (https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=17619). In fact, you need to uninstall it and even create an entirely new profile without it. eMatrix is a better, supported, replacement.

You should also only be using one content-blocker or they can clash heavily. uBO and eMatrix have the same original author and made to work with each-other, so keep that one (since adblock latitude is retired: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=32037).

I disabled noscript and it still did it. Also it has the best simplest user interface. Version 5.1.9 should be modified for no problems.
So is that the specific problem?
What changed in the update? If that can just be a little modified that should do it then.
Duck Go works. Profile is clean.
Google pages sometimes dont load anyway without refresh. They changed to horrible code. What else can be done..

Just disabling NoScript doesn't work. You need to entirely uninstall it, and make a new profile about:profiles
NoScript corrupts any profile it is used in.

NoScript could be part of the problem, but it's not for sure. Uninstall it, and try again with the new profile first.

You should reset this pref back to 128.0. Google is notorious for user-agent sniffing, and will serve you the "basic" interface if it thinks your browser is "too old".

(I tested using, general.useragent.compatMode.version: 52.9, & Google seemed OK with that.

Google forces you to have JavaScript enabled, so if JS were blocked by NoScript, Google Search would not work - but they also present you with a page that tells you to enable JS, which the OP is not getting, so that would not seem to be the issue.)

Yeah something in the update is now conflicting with noscript maybe. Google takes to long to load each page if ever. Youtube vids in search cause too long pause. First video on browser open takes too long. Then back to 'regular' long time.

It's just a silly conflict. My browser has no other problems at all. You can just modify it a little so it is like previous version of Basilisk which was working great.
Noscript will always have its user base because it is easier to use. Unless ematrix is modified to provide same interface variation too.

But we need something right away.

I'm afraid you won't find it here. While I can't speak for Basilisk-Dev, I will no longer spend time on trying to troubleshoot any "silly conflicts" arising from a known-bad extension that, IMO, should be hard-blocked in any UXP-based application. Aside from the obvious issues with a "simple interface" for what is inherently a tricky thing to do right, its structure and use of platform internals in a very uninformed and dangerous way (not to mention obfuscated, pretty questionable blobs of code contained within it, see other threads) just make it a Bad Idea™ to keep using.

If you need something right away, migrate to a maintained and known-good extension. If you want a modified version of ematrix, then you or anyone else with the skill can do it -- it's Open Source -- and publish a fork of it for all those NoScript users with a hunkering for a minimalist control surface.

I don't intend to block users from installing any addons, even poorly written or malicious ones, but yeah I won't be offering support for NoScript at all considering neither of you nor I wrote the extension in the first place and it's known to screw up profiles.

It's just a silly conflict. My browser has no other problems at all. You can just modify it a little so it is like previous version of Basilisk which was working great.
Noscript will always have its user base because it is easier to use. Unless ematrix is modified to provide same interface variation too.
I'm not sure what you mean in regards to modifying Basilisk to behave like the previous one. There were no changes that would affect your ability to do a Google search.

A simplified fork of eMatrix with a similar interface to NoScript is actually not a terrible idea.

But we need something right away.
The community is absolutely happy to help with issues, but demanding immediate help is not going to do you any favors here.

I mean previous version didn't have these problems. Assuming noscript is the problem. So just a small mod to go around it until a new fork of ematrix is developed.
Youtube lags are unacceptable because of these psychos. Also you made it unnecessary to press stop script on certain videos. Well vids that pompously have premiere enabled usually crash, instead of auto-continuing.
Basilisk with classic theme has become quite necessary with so many sell-out browsers that are aesthetic horror!
So anyways yes I would say all that is an emergency of immediacy..
But then again I live urgently.

I use Google Search and Startpage Search and I have no problems using both of them. In fact I used both of them earlier this morning.

The only two extensions I use are uBlock Origin 1.16.6.1 and Zoom Label (1.3). I do use a theme for my 64 bit linux Pale Moon 34.1 (GTK2) and that theme is Past Modern Revisited 2.11.0 which I have modified in how it looks to my liking by using the Customize Toolbar.

The OP has something wrong on their end. And I do not think it has anything to do with Baslisk or Pale Moon.
