audio/video Preview in Browser stopped working

Post by kiwikid » 2025-09-24, 07:47

Basilisk 2025.07.04 (64 bit) (GTK3) was working fine on Debian Linux 11.2 (kernel 5.xx), I could preview a test website on my disk, and html5 videos would show in the browser window.
A new SSD, a fresh new install of Debian 13.1 (kernel 6.12.43+deb13-amd64), same version Basilisk, profile copied off old disk, and the videos now ask what to do. Settings > Applications > mp4video has options Always ask; Save file; Open with SMPlayer (default).
mp3 audio embedded thus:
<audio controls>
<source src="20240607-ancient-zither.mp3" type="audio/mpeg">
Your browser does not support the audio element.
</audio>
does not show the play control or the unsupported text
Podcast, Video podcast, and Web Feed seem to be the only Content Types now allowed to Preview in Basilisk.
about:config looks sane to me, but I didn't keep a copy of the old one. First instinct is to blame Debian, but, FF, Librewolf, qutebrowser all play the videos in browser window like they did before

Probably Debian removed ffmpeg 6. The soon-to-be-released version of Basilisk will have support for ffmpeg 7 (the latest ffmpeg version currently available) so just wait until then.

Yup, they sure did, and yup, the 20251010 Basilisk has fixed it.

One day I'll overcome my religious scruples about the method to donate to Basilisk ...

I accept cash delivered by horse courier, preferably under a full moon. I also accept donations via carrier pigeon.
