Bugged Google tab-search

Unread post by Honeyko » 2025-01-11, 21:31

Test1: enter a search term in the search field of the menu-bar; hit enter = Google search works fine
Test2: ditto, but in the search-bar of a new tab or new window = nothing happens

Go to magnifying-glass next to search, select a different search-engine (Bing, etc) = works fine.
switch back to Google, fails again.
Go to Change Search Settings, remove existing Google, then re-add. Still fails.

This is has been going on for two or three months across several versions, Mac and PC.

Attempts to duplicate in other Firefox-fork browsers:
-- Firefox 119 ESR: (typing in tab-search triggers a drop-menu from menubar-search; works)
-- Firefox (latest as of post): Ditto
-- Palemoon 33.5: (tab-search locked to DuckDuckGo regardless of set preference; unable to test Google)
-- Waterfox G6.0.20: Google tab search works fine
-- Waterfox Classic: Google tab search works fine (both of these Waterfoxes are non-current)
-- Orion 0.99.130 (Mac): (doesn't have a search field in new tabs)
-- Waterfox (latest as of post): (no longer has a search field in new tabs)

Regrettably I do not have a mid-summer version of Basilisk around to test.

Yeah, I know Google search is a pale shadow of what it was ten years ago, but it's still the best and really only option for complex Boolean searches.

I don't currently have Basilisk installed, but I did not have a problem with Pale Moon. Win10, v33.5-64b. Using the address bar to search uses whatever engine is currently selected in the search bar, including Google.

Did you misspell Wolfram Alpha?

Is there any way you could provide a video or GIF or something? I'm unable to replicate the bug but I feel like I'm doing something wrong on my end when following the instructions.

Sorry,, where is the so called 'the search-bar of a new tab or new window' or what do you mean? My new tab or new window is always empty.
Also, I love using the 'search Google for...' option on the right-click menu when selecting a word or phrase. And it is working every time.

in the search-bar of a new tab or new window = nothing happens
Confirmed.

Basilisk 20250103 x64, Win7
add Google search as a search engine, https://addons.basilisk-browser.org/sea ... ns/#google
set Google as your Default Search Engine
open a new tab
type in a Search in the New Tab search box

results:

suggestions are shown
but no search is effected (not by hitting <CR>, nor by hitting the 'Submit search' button)

Console & Network show zilch

Actually, it looks like the Search Box in the New Tab page is simply broken altogether - regardless of Goggle (or any other search engine).

Also broken:
basilisk-20241122173226.win64.7z.
basilisk-20241023020213.win64.7z

Works:
basilisk-20240912184157.win64.7z
basilisk-20240816013359.win64.7z
basilisk-20231209103946.win64.7z

Thank you for taking the time to look into this further. I will have this error fixed in the next release.
