Sync DB reset planned.

Unread post by Moonchild » 2016-10-12, 11:12

Dear Sync users,

After some in-depth analysis of the data stored in our Pale Moon sync database, it became clear that due to the server move and reconfigurations over time, some data may have been corrupted and a percentage of index records is incorrect/pointing to unrecoverable data.
Although this would (potentially) solve itself over time, it would also cause unreliability of synchronizations, if those corrupted records/indices are hit by Sync clients.

The only way to make sure of the Sync service working 100% is to proactively do a one-time full database reset on the data collections (User data, not user accounts) and have all users re-synchronize their data. Under normal circumstances this will not impact Sync users, but some data loss may occur if you are using Sync as a "first install" service (not intended use).
Of course, this will also require you to re-send your initial data to the server when it is back up, using some bandwidth. Sorry for the inconvenience.
After the downtime you can have Pale Moon synchronize as usual from an installed copy to re-populate the database.

The downtime and DB reset is planned for Saturday, 15 October 2016. Downtime is expected to be short for the DB reset, but the server will be under relatively heavy load afterwards as the DB is built up again from users syncing their data, which can cause some interruptions or slow sync speeds.
