Sync service terms updated

Unread post by Moonchild » 2016-01-30, 14:04

We've updated the Sync terms of service to clarify this is a shared service and not unlimited.

We will take action for any user in gross excess of the reasonable limits imposed to keep usage of this service acceptable for all users without requiring us to make disproportional expenses from our limited budget (they are already substantial). Thankfully, the list is currently very short, but some users seem to be tenacious in creating new accounts to continue their over-use (you know who you are, and no, changing IP doesn't make it any less obvious). Please note that we are flexible in the stated limits but if you are using more than 3x the intended use (let alone 10x!), you are most definitely in violation.

Specifically, the following section has been updated:
Limited storage

Limited time storage:
This Service will retain User Data only for a limited time. If the Service is not actively used by a user, the User Data stored on the server may be removed at our discretion to free up server resources for other users who actively use the Service.
As a general guideline, User Data older than 2 months (not modified on the server for 2 months) may be removed from the server database in any scheduled or ad hoc maintenance window (either announced or not). This does not affect user accounts, only User Data.

Limited volume storage:
This service has limited capacity which is shared among all users, and it is the user's responsibility to keep their individual usage under control. We reserve the right to, in our sole discretion, remove any account or block access to the service from any account or IP we find in excess of reasonable storage limits for this Sync service.
As a guideline, users should try to keep their data usage preferably around 15MB or less, and reduce their data storage if it exceeds 30MB by cleaning up history or deselecting categories to synchronize. Sync client software will be able to query the server for quota in use.
Please review the terms if you are a Sync user and have not recently taken note of the service terms.
