Encrypted Web 5.1.5 blocking images?

Unread post by parpfish II » 2017-05-28, 20:59

Hi all,

Just wanted to report (something that may be known, but couldn't find it in search).
On this site (and a few others - not sure exactly what technical issue is causing this) images don't show for me:
http://www.backpackingnorth.com/ultrali ... t-a-break/

When I disable Encrypted Web they do show.
I realise that EW is no longer being maintained, but thought it worth mentioning.

Are there alternatives to EW?

P.

Forcing encryption for sites that aren't designed to serve encrypted traffic (because it's general public information) simply has these kinds of drawbacks.
"Sometimes, the best way to get what you want is to be a good person." -- Louis Rossmann
"Seek wisdom, not knowledge. Knowledge is of the past; wisdom is of the future." -- Native American proverb
"Linux makes everything difficult." -- Lyceus Anubite

You can install the current version of HTTPS Everywhere with the Moon Tester Tools extension. It's also possible to hack HTTPS Everywhere to make it work with Pale Moon by adding Pale Moon's GUID to the chrome.manifest file and deleting the META-INF folder in the .xpi file. Of course it's not guaranteed to work and your computer could explode, yadda yadda. I'm using it and haven't had any issues, but as always you're doing so at your own risk.

Thank you both for the info. Much appreciated. If you have a moment I'd really like to know why some sites' images don't get "parsed" (?) and some are fine.
Here's any example of a 2 sites I've come across that don't show images when Encrypted Web is on, and another 2 that have no problem, yet I can't see any major differences in code. Is this a server issue?

Blocking effect:
http://www.livefortheoutdoors.com/gear- ... mma-review
http://www.backpackingnorth.com/ultrali ... t-a-break/

No effect:
http://scramblekit.uk/review/index.php? ... er-extreme
http://scottishmountaineer.com/arcteryx ... dy-review/

...
Ah, the blocked sites seem to be pulling image data from Square Space:
https://static1.squarespace.com/static/ ... SC4981.jpg

So is it the combination of http + https that's causing the issue.
The other 2 that aren't blocked are both serving images from their own domain, so no http / https conflict. I'm guessing that's the issue?

Just curious as to how this stuff works.

Cheers,
P.

I have had sites that have issues with HTTPS Everywhere being enabled. Sometimes images don't load and sometimes videos don't load. When you click on the Encrypted Web icon it shows you which domains have rules for using HTTPS. If you can find which one is causing the trouble, you can disable that one and still use Encrypted Web for everything else. A local news site I visit won't serve videos until I disable HTTPS for AmazonWebServices. The sites you posted seem to work fine without me having to change anything, but I am using a newer version of HTTPS Everywhere so there could be a fix or ruleset change that makes it work. The extension does affect usability, but so far for me it's been rare enough to not be too much of a hassle to stop using it.

This might explain why Photobucket won't server me any images anymore...
Thanks for posting!
