Adding to bookmarks (feature request)

Unread post by LuftWafflePilot » 2024-08-19, 08:12

Would it be possible to let the user add a link to bookmarks and boormarks toolbar BOTH? Currently you can only have either, and it's mildly annoying having to bookmark a site first and then do extra steps to copy the address, paste it to the toolbar and rename it.

The bookmarks toolbar is just a folder like any other bookmark folder. Any bookmark is accessible by default by typing the title or URL in the addressbar, or by narrowing the typed search down.

Makes no sense to create the same bookmark in two different folders, that too as a core browser feature instead of an extension :coffee:

to copy the address, paste it to the toolbar and rename it.
You don't have to do that at all. Just open the Organize Bookmarks Ctrl+Shift+B window (or sidebar Ctrl+B) and ctrl+drag the bookmark you want to copy to the bookmarks toolbar.

Yes, but that's still a workaround at best, and not really any simpler than how I do it.
I'm talking about the adding bookmark dialogue. You can only EITHER add one to the regular bookmarks OR the toolbar, not both at the same time. It's kinda annoying even though I'm not cutting my wrists over it.

I'm sorry but I don't see a reason to clutter the add bookmark dialog with something that it pretty uncommon.
Might want to make an extension for it :)

Bookmarks Toolbar bookmarks ARE "regular bookmarks" as far as I know. They are just in a different location.

You are not expected to add duplicate bookmarks. If for some reason you want to do that, you'll have to arrange them yourself. If anything, there are/were several extensions to locate and actually delete duplicate bookmarks.

I guess an extension could be made for what you are after, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Add Bookmark Helper improves a few things, but it won't do this most probably.

I am seriously surprised I am apparently the only person on the planet who does this.
I treat the toolbar as a quick access menu with stuff I open often, but I also like to have all bookmarks sorted and categorized, hence why I also keep them in the usual place.
I guess everyone uses stuff differently.

I'm sure other people have duplicate bookmarks, but it doesn't seem like a normal workflow to immediately bookmark and toolbar the same site upon first marking it; I'd think that to be an exception rather than the rule (if for nothing else but the limited space the toolbar has, maxing out at 15 or so on an average screen/window size?).

I actually do use the Bookmarks Toolbar as a "quick access menu". All of my most used bookmarks are there, but they are already organised in folders, each with its custom icon. The remaining ones in "Bookmarks Menu" are the most obscure, less used ones. Also organised, no need for duplicates.

These two extensions improve the Bookmarks Toolbar even further:

I don't think I have ever created a new bookmark and wanted it on the Bookmarks Toolbar immediately? I love creating bookmarks, but everything on the toolbar needs to earn the right to be there (because it's a finite space) and so generally it is only after an item has been in a bookmark folder (all my bookmarks are categorised into folders) for a period of time that I think yeah, I visit that site so often that I will promote it to the toolbar.

That is the way I work, and while I can imagine that occasionally it might be advantageous to make a new bookmark and make a copy of it in the toolbar folder too, it would be a rare exception.

That's a nice way of putting it.
