PM buggy in site VirusTotal

Unread post by mzoro » 2023-11-07, 17:36

It could be interesting to understand why PM is buggy in Virustotal https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload.
Try to upload a file and see what happens.

Note: I disabled the addons to check whether this is a browser specific problem.

I sent a 9.5MB jpeg as I only have a 16/2 meg ratio and got a 0/54 score.

Please, upload an exe file, not an image.
I personally uploaded the lingoes exe: http://www.lingoes.net/en/translator/download.htm.
(not the installation exe in the link, I mean the program lingoes.exe that appears after installation in the "program files" folder. )

Note: the site works fine with the same file when I use Firefox, so this seems not to be a site problem.

I uploaded palemoon.exe, everything seems to be working fine.
Maybe you can finally describe the problem instead of speaking in riddles?

Your addons may have changed something in about:config, so try a fresh profile.
Disabling addons is not equivalent to a fresh profile.

OK, I've tried with the genuine default profile. Same behavior, PM almost completely freezes after uploading the file (actually, it seems extremely buzzy).
I am using Windows7, 32 bit.
I've tried with other exe files, same behavior.

Note: have you tried to move things and surf in the site after you uploaded the file?

It doesn’t freeze for me, although scrolling reacts with a noticeable delay. Perhaps the site loads a polyfill and emulates some browser functions on its own. This is just a guess.
But, in general, the site works. And it's not a site I use often.

I don't think I have an exe file that hasn't already been tested.

It's a serious site, one which I only use when I'm highly suspicious of something and I wait for the results (and plan the next move should it prove to be flagged by a trusted source) before moving on or risk getting distracted by twiddling about.

If I wanted to play games whilst I was visiting, I'd ask VT for a captcha.

Yeah, that's that, the scrolling (and other things) react with a noticeable delay. But for me, it is much more than noticeable: almost freezing.
The point is not this specific site, but why does this behavior occurs (as it will surely occur elsewhere). In my past programmer experience, that's the way to discover bugs that appears to be more important than the problem that helped to discover them.
I think it is not a site problem as Firefox and Chrome behave normally there.

but why does this behavior occurs
To be honest, I’m too lazy to figure this out right now... I’ve already said my guess about the possible reason... And, no, these symptoms are not observed on many sites.

This is something that I've noticed with VirusTotal since their new UI started working once basic WC support landed. From what I can tell, something* from inside a custom element in the page is forcing a reflow with every scroll. Unfortunately, it's obfuscated as usual...

Interesting! so there is a problem that we cannot solve, since it is obfuscated. This seems to corroborate to what I thought from long: Big companies try to prevent small free competitors like PM to survive, otherwise how is it possible that chrome and Firefox know how to handle theses problems? there are deals under the table there...
