[Resolved by Extension] Feature Request Concerning Bookmarks

Unread post by ron_1 » 2023-09-04, 20:15

In my alternate browser (Chromium) if I go to bookmarks and middle-click to open a bookmark, the bookmark menu will stay open so that I can continue to middle-click other bookmarks. This is very convenient if I want to open multiple, but not all, bookmarks in a folder. Can the same functionality be added to Pale Moon? Thanks.

Can't you achieve that using View->Sidebar-<>Bookmarks ?

I suggest that for functionality like that, you use the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B) which will remain open when you open a selection of bookmarks individually.
Standard menus, by design, will dismiss when you make a selection; that is expected standard UI behaviour and I'm not inclined to change that.

I'm not about to use the sidebar, so I guess I'll just have to live with it. This is the only thing I found that Chrome/Chromium changed that, IMHO, is for the better.

Chrome has shat upon established desktop UI conventions ever since its debut (starting with ditching the menubar for the hamburger menu) so I wouldn't use that as a benchmark for how any UI is supposed to work. Sidebars have been in browsers since Netscape but of course they had to ditch using sidebars altogether for siMpLiCiTy and then implement this hack.

While we all (or most, at least) are agreed that Gooble is crap, this particular change of theirs results in less needed clicks (and without wasted screen-space), which is, to me, an improvement. If a change is for the better, I don't care where it comes from.

Stay-Open Menu

Also Tab Utilities Fixed (less bugs than Tab Utilities Phoenix) has this feature, too.

Installed it in a new profile to test it out. In the initial test it seems to work just fine. Will continue to test a while before I put it in my default profile. Also uploaded it to virus total just to be sure it was clean, and it is. Thanks once again.

BTW - Previous discussion on same subject of 'keeping Bookmarks Menu dropdown open'... with same extension as answer... in topic 'How to keep bookmark folder drop down open after selection' some 18 months back. :)

FWIW - This functionality is not only a Chrome feature... a similar option to keep the Bookmarks Menu dropdown open was incorporated into Firefox at some later date (after the Basilisk fork)... and can be activated in all current versions of Firefox/LibreWolf/Waterfox, etc... by setting preference 'browser.bookmarks.openInTabClosesMenu' to 'false' in about:config. 8-)

If there are more people wanting this as an option, I can build it into the browser itself. Just let me know.

I use this a lot. Stay-Open Menu works about 9 out of 10 times. That 1 out of 10, the menu closes anyway even if I hold Ctrl (not using middle-click).

I only do this in the Bookmarks Toolbar drop-down bookmarks menu (or is it pop-up?), not in a sidebar or elsewhere.

Although this thread is marked "Resolved" I just Had to chime in; When I first started using Pale Moon I found a replacement for AIOS (All in One Sidebar) a Firefox extension I had previously used.

IDK if it's what the OP is looking for, but worth a look see maybe?

How many people would need to request it? Maybe make a poll?

This may or may not help anyone reading this thread in the future, but a directory in the bookmarks menu can be middle-clicked (or Ctrl clicked) to open all of the bookmarks contained within as new tabs. If one organizes their bookmarks with this in mind, it could easily save even more clicks than leaving the menu open. It might be a paradigm shift for some, and maybe not your cup of tea, but it has great potential.

For example, place three YouTube bookmarks in a "Study/relax" directory and open them all at the same time. :D

Tab Utilities Fixed (less bugs than Tab Utilities Phoenix)
For me, Tab Utilities Fixed doesn't like manually moving tabs. No problems with Tab Utilities Phoenix.

Forked extensions :
● Add-ons Inspector ● Auto Text Link ● Copy As Plain Text ● Copy Hyperlink Text ● FireFTP button replacement ● gSearch Bar ● Navigation Bar Enhancer ● New Tab Links ● Number Tabs ● Print Preview Button and Keyboard Shortcut 2 ● Scrollbar Search Marker ● Simple Marker ● Tabs To Portfolio ● Update Alert ● Web Developer's Toolbox ● Zap Anything

Hint: If you expect a reply to your PM, allow replies...

Latest version 1.5.2017.08.17? Strange, no problems with moving tabs here, although I'm using vertical tabs option.

I'd say at least 10 forum-goers? not sure a poll would help because it's not actually a choice between several options. I just want to gauge how many people would want this or use it.
