HTML5 on old or very old PC's

Unread post by neverAgain » 2021-05-20, 20:59

Hello
I'm new here.

a.
1a. Are all version of Pale Moon HTML5 able?
2a. If no, using an old 32-bit live Linux, which version No. is minimal required for HTML5? Is a flash player required (for that minimal version)
3a. and which flash player version No.?

4a. Are versions of Pale Moon able to view videos in news paper etc. without flash player?
5a. Since which Pale Moon version No.)

b.
same questions 1b, 2b, 3b, 4b, 5b for very old 64 bit PC's with memory less or equal 2 GB

(diverse non official hobby coders in Puppy Linux did implement Pale Moon in their own versions of Puppy Linux, and I find there is no transparency where what is possible...)?

Kind regards

I'm afraid your questions can't easily be answered because... html5 is not a single standard. In fact it's not a standard at all because it's a "living standard" meaning it changes from day to day. Unlike html 3.0 or 4.01 which are defined.

So it all depends on what exactly you are looking for.
Of note, modern websites will not like very old PCs because they are invariably loaded with megabytes of JS which will make it slow as tar.
Trying to load those websites on machines with less than 2 GB total memory (meaning even less than that free) will also very quickly have you run out of memory.

I'm using a 15 yr old Intel Core Duo T2250 laptop with 2 gb ram with an onboard Intel gpu. This laptop uses Mageia GNU Linux 8 and 32bit. I use Pale Moon on it without much issue. And even fork extensions. Of course playing Youtube videos is not good with these specs. But 480p videos are playing well.

(I recently switched from XP desktop, 2 GB RAM, & on "normal" sites, it was fine. Videos & crap sites were avoided.
Videos & crap sites still generally avoided on a better spec'd Win7 machine.)

Is a flash player
Flash is dead, EOL.
You're not going to find "video" sites around that still have flash.

(That said, there are some fringe, perhaps "game" sites that may still be using Flash.
For those, you'd need an older version of Flash & a browser that still supports Flash - like Pale Moon.)

I'm not certain, but what PM may or may not see on particular sites may be more OS based rather then browser based, per se.
(Like on XP, without tweaks, a lot of current video sites simply won't work.)
