Palemoon unstable portable 07 Dec / Internal update didn't work

Post by JoeyG » 2019-12-07, 13:09

I've updated the unstable portable version internally dozens of times over the past couple of years. This was, I think, the second time it's failed.

After getting the message that an update was available, I clicked "Update Now" (or whatever it says). A window opened immediately that said "Update failed / Unknown error" or something to that effect.

I then updated manually from https://www.palemoon.org/unstable/, of course using my old "User" folder. The new version works fine so far.

I like the new splash screen.
Pale Moon x64 28.8.3, 29.0.0a2 (portable 2020.02.19), and Basilisk x64 2020.02.18 on Win7 SP1 x64 (English). Lenovo S20, Xeon X5670, 12gb RAM. NEC PA272W on Matrox C420. NEC SpectraView 241 and PA241W on Matrox M9120. Thanks to the devs.

I just checked the update and all seems fine. Perhaps you were trying to update while the actual archive was still in the process of being uploaded (bad timing)?

Thank you for your reply.

This could have been the case. I tried it at about 14.00 (2pm) Berlin time.

I just (22.30 / 10.30pm Berlin time) tried it on another computer; it worked fine.

Interestingly, I was only able to see the new(?) splash screen when I updated manually.

Using the internal updater in the portable is an option but not recommended as an update method.
There are the occasional changes and updates to the portable launcher and shell (and not just visual like the splash screen) that you would be missing out on when you use the internal updater as it will only update the portable's embedded browser, nothing else.

Yes, I've read this in the notes, but being lazy by nature, ...

I have a suggestion: In "Help -> Check for Updates", when there's a new version, how about something like this?
