Support for Windows 8

Unread post by Buggle » 2012-08-14, 14:35

I've recently installed Windows 8 Release Preview (x86) on a secondary laptop (Intel Merom, 945 chipset, NVidia GeForce Go 7400) to test whether the system is something for me.
Using Palemoon 12.3r2 x86 on it however is next to impossible, as it keeps freezing after loading a website in a new tab.
Opening a link to a new tab is not a problem; the website loads, but right before it is complete, Palemoon freezes (albeit without Windows saying that the program does no longer respond - it simply does not react anymore). After some 20 seconds it returns to normal and the rendering is completed, and PM reacts to input again.
Naturally this can be a problem in the firefox code somewhere, it probably is not Palemoon specific. But as PM is the browser I use, I wanted to input this; maybe you already know about it, or maybe it is an isolated problem. About:support shows HA is on. Direct2D however is not.
If you want more information, I'm happy to supply it.

By the way, it does not do this with all pages. I can't really figure out under which circumstances it does, and under which it does not, unfortunately.
Also; I must test with the RTM of course, but that will not land on my system for some weeks to come considering that upgrade is not possible from RP.

Edit: at least Facebook is clearly affected.

You probably need to make sure to have direct2d/layers acceleration ON in Pale Moon when running on windows 8 if you have HWA on otherwise.
For the time being you may try to disable HWAand see if that helps.

Pale Moon 15 will probably behave better in that scenario.
