It has been a while since viewtopic.php?f=5&t=26037&p=206989&hilit=avif#p206989 was closed and currently AVIF is widely supported between the main web browsers.
I have been reading the JPEG-XL threads here too but I want to ask again. Is a possibility to add support for AVIF in UXP and enable it for Pale Moon in consequence?

Re: Support for AVIF image format?
It's currently not on our roadmap as it adds little to no real value for the browser.
If anyone wants to work on this though, they are welcome to, and PRs to that effect will be happily evaluated and accepted if proper.
