Activate Flash/Plug in is Vurnerable?

Unread post by Thehandyman1957 » 2015-08-04, 04:59

Hello all, I seem to be having an issue with flash player. It has done this before. What is happening is that when ever I get a Youtube video it will show a two tone grey striped background with a small red circle with a line in it towards the top and below that it says that the plug in is vulnerable and should be updated. It gives me the option to update or activate. So I always tell it to activate and Pale Moon will ask if I want to allow for once or to remember. I tell it to remember but then when I go to another video later it will make me do the whole process over again. I have had a lot of problems with newer versions of Flash and so I stay behind.
( Yes I know it could be a vulnerability ).

Is there a way to get it to quit blocking flash so I don't have to activate it every time?

Yes, by installing the latest v13 ESR of Flash. It's neither vulnerable, nor blocked, and likely will not give any issues in Pale Moon (it hasn't for me, at any rate)

I would be interested in changing my current up-to-date flash player. The ESR sounds like a good idea. But as is typical of many sites they fail to make it crystal clear what to download. I went to the link above and want to confirm a couple of things before I begin trying to lose current flash and load the ESR version.

1. Should I remove my current version of flash, including the junk left behind after using the Adobe uninstall, before I download the ESR?
2. Am I correct in assuming I want the one indicated for windows using plug in browsers and that I want the .ex not the .msi version?
3. I normally check for or am informed of updates but never set anything to update automatically. Do I need to "Download Background Update Resources"?

Thanks for helpimng with this.

You'll want to uninstall any Adobe Flash product you're able to uninstall. This usually excludes the ActiveX version which is handled by Windows Update.

Then you grab this file.

 Hey there Moonchild, Could you enlighten me on what the difference is with the ESR version of flash compared to what we have been using?

I just wanted to note that when I initially made the switch I used the link above to the MSI version. For some reason it did not work. So I deleted the download, and went back and downloaded the .exe version and it worked fine.

I just visited the Adobe site and here is the latest information and description of the ESR, The middle paragraph explains the basic difference between the ESR release and the version most individual users tend to have. It is supposedly more stable and secure because it lacks some of the most modern functionality that probably appeals to games etc:
Upcoming changes to Flash Player’s extended support release

Beginning August 11th, 2015, we will be upgrading Flash Player’s extended support release from version 13 to version 18. This change impacts enterprise and IT customers that currently deploy Flash Player using the extended support releases available through our distribution channel.

Adobe makes available the extended support release to organizations that prefer Flash Player stability over new functionality. We will create a branch of the Flash Player code that we keep up to date with all of the latest security updates, but none of the new features or bug fixes available in our normal release branch. This allows organizations to certify and stay secure with Flash Player with minimal effort.

To ensure a smooth transition, we encourage IT organizations to thoroughly test our version 18 releases (currently available on labs.adobe.com) over the next couple of months before deploying.
I have version 13 and am wondering, in light of the above, when one should upgrade to ver. 18? Now or wait a bit?

I have been using version 18 for a while on both my computer and my wife's. I haven't noticed any bugs or quirks with it. Now that version 18 is the current ESR, I'm planning on staying on ESR 18.

8-) Well that clears it up for me. Thanks. I will be staying with the ESR version from now on. I much prefer stable to new and un-tried.
