Printing Trouble

Post by WaltP » 2015-06-29, 16:50

I'm having trouble with Pale Moon printing a page. No other browser (FF, Opera, IE) and no other program exhibits this behavior.

Print preview shows very large margins. The page is printed on standard 8-1/2x11, the image printed is 3" by 4" and positioned at the top-center of the page. The printed text is 1-1/4" by 3-1/4".

My Print settings are:
- Portrait
- Shrink to fit width
- All margins 0.5"

Setting the scale to other values simply changes the print size but leaves the printer viewport as is.

The first attachment shows what I see in Print Preview.

I am currently on 25.5.0. This has been happening through multiple updates.

Where do I look to get more information about this problem so we can troubleshoot it?

Thanks,
Walt

A forum editor window is not printer-friendly.
If you are looking for a way to print non-printer-friendly pages, then you should look at a capturing extension like Fireshot or similar to make a graphical snapshot of the page and print that.

Please read my post. It has nothing to do with printing a forum page. That simply illustrated the problem. It has to do with printing ANY and ALL pages.

Don't know anything about your environment but I use PM 25.5.0 (x86) on Windows 8.1 and print quite a bit, typically with no issues (it's always a bit hit & miss on web pages). Here are my examples:

Print Preview:

Of course, trying to squish a web page into a very small print area may result in unwanted results.

Please read my post. It illustrated that a forum editor is a prime example of a non-printer-friendly page and it applies to many pages that have not been designed specifically for content printing.
You have to understand that the web browser will print web documents as HTML documents, not as a graphical presentation (which can be vastly different), unless you use a graphical capture tool to capture the page as-rendered-on-the-screen, and print that.

it will not happen with any and all pages as you assert. The percentage of web pages that will not print well this way will, however, be a growing number as advanced compositing, dynamic HTML styling and "fluid" layouts take the place of more traditional document structures. For example, a CSS styled list (as used on the Pale Moon home page to create the drop-down menu) will not print in its collapsed, styled way as laid out on the screen, but will show the underlying document structure of a nested list. The web page menu could be redesigned to print it more as-seen on the screen, reverting to a more static design with lots of javascript code to achieve the same goal instead of CSS, but that was not the site's designed intent, and as such it is not printer-friendly.

EDIT: there are, by the way, services out there that will "make pages printer-friendly" for you that normally aren't, e.g. http://www.printfriendly.com/about

1st - what size paper is selected in Properties when you do {Ctrl + P}?

2nd - check your margin setting to make sure they aren't huge.
Palemoon button > Print -> Page Setup -- Margins & Header/Footer
What are your left and right margin settings?
0.5 is the default for both when using US Letter / Legal paper.

(sigh)

See attachment

PM prints as described in the attachment. FF & SeaMonkey prints the page legibly, albeit with 2" margins, and IE & Opera prints the full page width.

Hey Waltp, I am using PM 25.6.0 Atom version in Windows XP and tried your problem. I can see the confusion in you trying to show us the problem your experiencing and the reply from Moonchild. I understand his argument but see that it was not intended to show that issue. So I tried the same thing and this is what I get.

So we can see that indeed the forum does not show as intended but does show as you would want it too.

Here is a pic of my margin settings.

I don't see any difference between your settings and mine at all. But mine works and yours does not. I would try deleting your profile and maybe even uninstall and reinstall PM and see if that fixes the problem. Wish I could give a better answer but sometimes the simple one works the best.

I also noticed an older post you made talking about this. Is this the same problem? I tried messing with a bunch of settings in my printer to see if I could get PM to change it's preview size but to no avail. No matter what I did the preview is the same. If this started with a new printer did you ever try doing a restore to see if it would fix it? I'm sure by now it would be too late to try that. Though that would not explain why Firefox does it right.

Not really sure what else to say. :geek:
