error trying to install

Unread post by frapper » 2015-06-01, 14:06

I am attempting to help someone install Palemoon on an XP computer. We live quite a few states apart so I can't go to her home and troubleshoot the issue. I gave her version 24.7.2, the last version capable of running on XP.
Also, she is on dialup, just in case that might be part of the problem. She said that Internet Explorer has been broken since sometime in late 2013 and she chalked it up to a problem with Avast. She can use the internet on K-meleon but she wanted something that web sites support. I have no specs on the computer itself.

When she attempts to install Palemoon, this is the error she receives:
The procedure entry point Get Logical Processor Information could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll .
Can someone explain in plain English what this means. I don't mind searching for solutions but I have to be able to identify the problem first and that's where I'm stuck.

Thanks in advance

A minimum of Windows XP SP3 is required.

Also, variants of PM capable of running on XP are available:

Thanks. I'm not sure if she has SP3 on. I assumed she did but it won't be the first time I'm mistaken.
So is that error related to not having SP3 installed?

I did send her a special portable version for XP as a 2nd attempt. 25.4.1 winxp32

None of the current versions of Pale Moon will run on XP with Service Pack 2. It requires and depends on the kernel updates present in Service Pack 3. It doesn't matter which build of Pale Moon you send off, they will not work.

As an aside, SP2 users also have not received any security updates for the last 5 years - she really is taking an unnecessary big risk of infection with viruses and trojans.

Recommended steps for her:
  1. Get Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the Microsoft website and install it
  2. Once installed, run Windows Update immediately, and let it install all critical updates
  3. Install Pale Moon

I know your intentions are good and ordinarily I'd say the same thing you are saying BUT she is on dialup! It took her 2 hours just to download Palemoon at 24MB. If she doesn't have SP3, I am not going to tell her to tie up her phone line for probably 26 hours or more to download a 316.4MB file!
I also believe she has a monthly limit to the amount she can download.
Unfortunately, not everyone can afford broadband. (She is a senior living on very little income with health issues).

She is in the process of getting a new computer. I don't know what OS she is going for. I was just trying to assist her in the meantime. If she can't use Palemoon, she'll have to limp along for the wee bit of light surfing and email she does using K-Meleon.

Thank you again for the explanation.

I wouldn't expect anyone to download all that over dialup (SP3 isn't the end of it, all the hotfixes will add quite a bit more). If she has a DVD-rom in her system, then I would suggest creating a master update disc for her with the service pack and all Microsoft hotfixes.

Here's a magnet link to such a disk for the US English version of Windows XP that I created a while back for my own convenience. It includes all service packs and hotfixes up to and including April 2014.

Code: Select all

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:msp6hjtx5anym5dfsaqihxcgez2qel47&dn=Windows%20XP%20ENU%20master%20update%20disc
Someone on broadband could download this ISO, burn it to DVD, and hand it to her. it has a no-brainer installation menu and everything to make it easy (courtesy of wsus offline updater)

Thanks for the magnet link Moonchild.
I'm downloading now and will seed for a few weeks to increase the download speed for others.
I have a couple of "senior clients" who don't want to move from XP and this will be useful if I have to reinstall.
