Do I need all these plugins ?

Unread post by bawldiggle » 2013-05-23, 01:23

By default (not of my choice) PaleMoon portable has 5 plugins listed.
My experience has been to keep plugins to a minimum.

Which of these can I do without?
  • 1. Adobe Acrobat 9.5.4.268 <<< at >20MB is very bloating
    2. Microsoft Office 2010 14.0.4761.1000 (Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010) <<< inherited with new laptop, to be uninstalled
    3. Shockwave Flash 10.3.183.68 <<< Java? has been in the bad news since Oct-2012
    4. Silverlight Plug-In 4.0.50401.0 <<< do I need it ?
    5. Window Live Photo Gallery 15.4.3502.922
Are there any alternatives ?

Thank you :)

Hi!

You can use another reader if you don't like Acrobat 9.5.5 (yes there is an update yet) is Sumatra PDF http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/free-pdf-reader.html I hope that 3.57 MB is not bloated for you!

Silverlight is only supported in Microsoft sites, you can skip it at all. I never installed it once.

Flash only is useful if you play online games in Facebook for example or see You Tube in Flash mode (HTML5 may be your option but speed varies from machine and internet speed in your location). :problem:

Office and Windows Live photo, do you really need those? If you want a free office replacement use Libre Office 4.0.3 https://www.libreoffice.org/ I did use M$ office 2003 until I saw that Libre Office can open all the docs and do all the same things without cost me an arm and leg.

Windows Live photo is only needed if you use MSN or Skype for send photos or edit them. Anything would be better for retouch photos, I use GIMP and other small programs like Fire Alpaca, Xnview and even Picasa.

I hope this help you!

As MoonChild has advised in the past, plugins can be disabled, well, most of them. When a visited site requires certain plugins, then the plugins can be enabled as needed.

Of the five plugins listed, I only use the Flash and your listed version is very outdated; current version 11.7.700.202. Many security vulnerablilities patched between the two versions.

Firefox/PaleMoon supposedly has an internal PDF reader, although I have not used it. I save my PDF for offline non-browser viewing.

lobocursor :)
Thanks for your response. I am working my way through your suggestions.

I have been using "Sumatra" portable to view saved PDF files. Just discovered Sumatra author advises against portable as default.
(I already use a portable app (Metapad) as default TXT/INI/REG/BAT/VBS reader)
But I will follow Sumatra authors advice and install the integrated version.

Thanks for your response too
I already leave Flash disabled following last years scares.

My plugin settings are set to automatically update, so I don't know why my "Shockwave Flash 10.3.183.68" remains outdated.
Manual check for updates returns "No updates found"

How else can I update "Shockwave Flash" ? :?

Thanks

"How else can I update "Shockwave Flash" ?"

"I already leave Flash disabled following last years scares."

I generally use filehippo.com to keep me informed of software version updates. Once in a while, their links give me the runaround and I resort to the source, https://www.adobe.com/products/flashpla ... tion3.html to get the latest. I think the site requires Flash to be enabled to be most effective.

In the past Adobe REFUSED to allow me to download the latest version of Flash.
All that they provided was a smaller downloader which I could only run so that it could install what it chose to install and where it installed it.

I either go to FileHippo or Softpedia so that I can download what I choose and supervise the installation.
I can choose to only have the non-Active'X (I never use I.E.)
I can choose to only have the 32 bit version because I only use 32 bit Palemoon on my 64 bit system.

Softpedia was better than FileHippo because Softpedia also hosted the Adobe uninstaller which gives a clean start
(I believe the old vulnerabilities may remain if the older versions are not purged.)
It is possible that FileHippo may also now host the uninstaller.

I believe you can also visit Adobe to install their old junk,
but they have lost my trust.
