Is there a way to get MIDI files to play within Pale Moon, or is the only solution to download the file and use an stand-alone player? I thought there was a MIDI plug-in, but I'm not seeing it now.

There should be no need to download the file. Open Pale Moon Preferences Applications pane. Search for the "Midi" content type. Select your external player, to play midi files, from the drop-down menu.

To play within Pale Moon, download and install VLC Media Player (64-bit) (for Windows 64-bit) or VLC Media Player (32-bit). For Linux, install the VLC Linux version for your distribution or from Videolan. Then open the Pale Moon Add-ons Manager to make sure that the VLC Plugin is set to either "Always Activate" or "Ask to Activate". Then set the Midi content type to open with the VLC plugin in Preferences.

When I tried to play Westminster-chimes.mid from Wikipedia, I got this error message:

Apparently, MIDI support has been removed from the VLC plugin, even though it's still included in the plugin's listing as supported. A fix might be available for Linux, but not for Windows (https://wiki.videolan.org/Midi/). Note that I was unable to play Westminster-chimes.mid directly in any of my media players, in Windows, even after downloading (the file opened, but there was no audio).

Then you may try quicktime plugin.

MIDI plays by default in Winamp, if you have it installed.

If you have Winamp, change MIDI file preference to Winamp in the Pale Moon Preferences Applications pane.
