Quick Search Bar and PM 27.2.0

I have run Quick Search Bar 4.17 on PM through many iterations of PM. It runs fine up through 27.1.0 (32 bit, on Windows 7). But it does not run at all with PM 27.2.0. There is no warning message. Sometimes it locks everything on all the other tool bars, and only hitting 'X" to close PM solves that problem.

I did a forum search, and only found one post on the subject, from 2016, with the writer saying he had problems with new profiles.

Has anyone had this problem, and if so, what is the fix or work around? Quick Search Bar is a great tool, and I don't want to be without that function.

It appears to have been removed from the Firefox add-on site by the author. I assume it is in my Profile somewhere, but I don't know which files, or even if I can send them to you.

shame that it's been pulled from AMO. can you describe the functionalities of the addon so i can recommend replacements?

Here is a link to a brief description. Best I could find, since the author has taken it off of the Firefox add-on list.
http://www.ghacks.net/2011/02/08/firefo ... ne-access/

Attached is a screen shot of where I have it placed, and a drop-down which shows what I chose to list. Just type in whatever you want in Duck Duck Go, or Wikipedia, or whatever, and then that source gets searched.

hmm never used a similar extension. perhaps you can contact addon specialist JustOff to ask for his help in determining what is wrong. in the meantime why don't you try to set keywords for more efficient searches, such as "a product" to search for a product on amazon, or "g query" to search for a query on google. maybe you'll find out how much more efficient it is and no longer deem your current solution necessary :D

I think what you're looking for is an extension called "Organize Search Engines". This is abandonware but works perfectly in Pale Moon, I've used it for years.

Thanks. I downloaded the .xpi file, but I'm not sure exactly how to use that to create the add-on.

I got it installed. Are there any instructions for it? I can't find any.
I would like to change the initial width of the entry, but I can't see how to do it.
Also, in Customize Toolbar, there is something named 'Location' that Organize Search Engine also added. I drug it to the tool bar, but I can't determine what it does. It seems to add arrows so when have multiple tabs, one can change the tab order. Is that right?

So I need a little primer on this.

P. S. I contacted JustOFF about Quick Search Bar. He said since the author had removed it, he could not help me.

Since you showed me what gets installed for an add-on, I have attached the .xpi file for Quick Search Bar 4.17. Just remember that I can't get it to run in PM 27.2, but it runs fine for me in 27.1.

PM's user customization is a double-edged sword for me. I have lots of items installed, but often I forget what does what! I have Stylish installed, and the width of items on the Search Bar is set with their 'Search bar-Auto size' style. I have now used that with Organize Search Engines. An image which shows how I have set both the 'at rest' and 'active' states is also attached.

hmm, may i have a link to Organize Search Engine? functionally it looks identical to what the builtin search bar already provides - a dropdown list of search engines.

i also tried Quick Search Bar in 27.2.1. x86_64 Linux and it seems to work fine

I have spend all day fooling with this thing, running lots of tests on various versions of PM 27.x ( x32 Portable), and I have the answer. If you look at the first image I posted back on March 22, you will see that I have my URL address bar at the BOTTOM of the various bars that are at the top of Pale Moon.

If you then look at the image I posted just above your last response, you will see that NO URL bar is there. There is no way for me to enter a URL. Your URL address is on the uppermost bar, which I think is the standard location.

To get a URL address bar at the bottom requires a modification to the UserChrome.css file. [See these two threads under Community Support which discuss the UserChrome.css changes: "Missing URL Address bar", and "Location of Address Bar".]

For some reason, this UserChrome.css change does not work in 27. 2.0. However, it DOES work in 27.2.1. And as you discovered, 'Quick Search Bar' also works in 27.2.1. I first determined that on the Portable version, and just updated my laptop to 27.2.1 (x86), and it works fine also.

I checked the Release notes for 27.2.1, and I can't find anything that addresses this issue. I plan to start a new thread to see if I can get Moonchild's attention, so he doesn't make a future change which creates the problem again.

Organize Search Engine also works fine, but Quick Search Bar lets me have two search engines open at once, which I like (see my initial image again, where you see both Duck Duck Go and Wikipedia).

Thanks for all your help and guidance through this.

very strange that it should function as a custom toolbar and not an a modification to an existing toolbar

As I noted in my response to the other thread, "UserChrome.css problem......", thanks. I guess when I read the release notes, I did not equate a manually added custom toolbar with UserChrome.css.

I read all the related threads referenced by GMforker in response to the thread I started "UserChrome.css problem with....", and I don't understand either why this UserChrome.css problem and custom toolbars are related. Not being a coding expert, there is a lot I don't understand. But I'm glad it is fixed.
