Status-4-Evar blocked

Post by kAlvaro » 2012-02-24, 11:34

I've just got a warning stating that Status-4-Evar 2012.01.14.17 has known stability issues and will be disabled on restart. Any idea of what's going on? The add-on is not even in the official list: https://addons.mozilla.org/es-ES/firefox/blocked/

I've blocked status-4-evar because it conflicts with the Pale Moon status bar add-on. Pale Moon has its own blocklist.

Thanks the prompt answer. I had assumed that Pale Moon was using Status-4-Ever. (It got there when I migrated my Firefox profile.)

Yes, it's one of the reasons it was explicitly added to the blocklist; the Pale Moon status bar add-on is a modified version of Status-4-Evar specifically catered to the version of Pale Moon it is supplied with. If people migrate their profile, status-4-evar should be disabled or removed, since there would be a hard conflict with having 2 add-ons trying to do the same and at the same time.

How can i override this blocklist? I'am using status-4-evar since Pale Moon 4 without any problems since I always delete the Pale Moon status bar from %programfiles%\Pale Moon\extensions after each update.

To override the block list, set extensions.blocklist.enabled to false -- please note that this will also disable blocking of malware add-ons and other add-ons that may seriously affect the browser, including causing irreparable damage to your profile and/or installation.

No support will be given for configurations that have the block list overridden

In addition, status-4-evar in its unmodified state may possibly not work 100% in current or future versions. The Pale Moon status bar add-on is at all times recommended over status-4-evar, since it is tailored for use in Pale Moon.

Hi Moonchild, i am user of Palemoon since i discovered it (in wikipedia -mid 2011-).
Also, i must mention, that I am Chilean (and speak Spanish).
First, thanks for the great project Palemoon, good job.
But, the decision of blocking Status-4-Evar is prepotent of your side, considering the addon still works.
I preferred the S4E over PM-status-bar simply for language support.
Note that, any conflict inter the two addons is avoid easy disabling one. Reason why to force uninstall S4E is a too extreme measurement.
Please, revert your decision thinking about foreign-language users like I.
(Disabling the whole blocklist is unthinking for me).

Thank you for your attention.

HI! We have a Spanish forum support too if you want to post your comments there as well. ;)

I'm quoting Moonchild:

So as you see, the plugin is already in use so why you cannot install it again. From now you could suggest that Moonchild add languages for the Palemoon Bar instead. I remind you that there are language packs for Palemoon at http://www.palemoon.org/langpacks.shtml. ;)

Saludos desde Mexico! :)

Hi lobocursor, I preferred post here due to the specific thread that Moonchild answer on Status-4-Evar. If not have found, had post my request in your forum (in Spanish).

I don't migrate my profile, i install it manually knowing what means. (And disable PM-Status-bar, of course).
BTW, i use Palemoon in my home, whose computer i share with several members of my family (different accounts).

 Sounds like a good alternative, count to me if need help.

Yep, my palemoon already setting in spanish.

Ok, then how can I remove status-4-evar from the blocklist.

Isn't this also true for any other add-ons and plugins?
How can you guarantee that any extension will work 100% in current or future versions.

Blocking an add-on only because it conflicts with another add-on or it "may possibly not work 100% in current or future versions" is really a bit too extreme.

It is like taking a car from people who own two cars, because they can't drive both of the at the same time or taking the only car because it may possibly have a break-down in the future.

poiuz wrote:Ok, then how can I remove status-4-evar from the blocklist.
You can't. The blocklist is dynamic, and will be updated once a day on-line. Any changes you make to the file will be overwritten when there is an update to this list.
Isn't this also true for any other add-ons and plugins?
No, because status-4-evar has a special position for Pale Moon. Like lobocursor said: it's disabled because the functionality is already in used by way of the Status Bar add-on; this status bar add-on is a core add-on for Pale Moon, and having 2 things in the program do the exact same thing causes issues.
How can you guarantee that any extension will work 100% in current or future versions.
I can guarantee it because I supply a version of the status bar add-on with the browser that has been tested with and tailored for that particular version of the browser - because it is core functionality for Pale Moon to have a status bar. Each major update of the browser comes with an updated version of the Pale Moon status bar.
This also means that removing or disabling the Pale Moon status bar add-on is at your own risk, and that you create a situation that is not supported by me.
Blocking an add-on only because it conflicts with another add-on or it "may possibly not work 100% in current or future versions" is really a bit too extreme.
I'm blocking the add-on because it conflicts with Pale Moon core functionality. The fact that this core functionality, because of technical reasons, is supplied as an add-on .xpi package is completely irrelevant. Blocking an add-on because of that kind of conflict is normal, and is -exactly- the reason for an add-on to be added to the blocklist.

As for your analogy with cars, that really doesn't hold up.

:!: Hi Moonchild, please not leave this thread without before reply my posts (in the Page 1).

Looking in mozilla-wiki (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Blocklisting) i found a new alternative:
Reduce the blockade severity to level 1 (soft block).
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Extension_Blocklisting:Testing says

There are two levels of blocking available to add-ons and plugins: soft and hard.

Soft-blocks disable the add-on by default, but allow the user to override and continue to use the add-on. This is the preferred option in almost all cases.

Hard-blocks disable the add-on and do not allow the user to enable it or override the block. This should only be used in cases where:

- an add-on is malicious
- a soft-block will not resolve the issue in question, such as a start-up crash
Please consider some alternative like this one, for support foreign-language users like me (reason why i prefer S4E over PM-status-bar).

Empatojayos: I did answer your questions, although not with direct quotes. Your concerns ARE addressed.

I'll consider making the Pale Moon status bar multi-lingual instead. Soft-blocking won't help since this is a hard conflict - Status-4-evar should simply never be used with Pale Moon. In future versions of Pale Moon it's also planned to integrate this functionality further and in that case the add-on will no longer be removable and it won't be possible to disable it.

You'll just have to be a little patient while I implement this, but as a temporary measure until that is done I will lower the severity so people who really need it can still use it until the work is done.

Wow. Interesting thread...

I've been using Status-4-Evar since the day I began using Pale Moon portables a few months ago, version 8.something I'm pretty sure, 32 & 64 bit on my XP & Win7 systems. I simply disabled the Pale Moon status bar and installed Status-4-Evar (and Extended Statusbar). The Adblock Plus and Ghostery buttons live on it, too.

I'm currently running PM 9.2 with Status-4-Evar 2012.01.14.17 and Extended Statusbar 1.5.8, again 32 & 64 bit on XP & Win7. Whenever a new PM portable is released, I simply unpack it into a new directory and copy the previous Default folder into it. Extensions updates are always handled by the Add-ons Manager.

What exactly are the conflicts Status-4-Evar is having with Pale Moon??

Conflicts with extension ID/interface, double overlays, double xul/js function entries (same name), basically you'd be installing the same add-on twice and that causes all sorts of trouble.

All the people who are using status-4-evar will unfortunately just have to ween themselves off of it, since the (long since planned) further integration of the status bar and options of it into the browser will make it a hard conflict.

 ... If the future is the full integration of PM-status-bar with Palemoon,
the translation of actual addon will be in the language-pack of future Palemoon? :?:
No, it will be integrated in the actual browser and supplied with the browser, without language pack. integrating this into the Pale Moon language packs would be something I do not have the resources for to make happen. It will be based on the way the add-on is built now, and initially will have a hard-coded English entry in the tools menu to access the options, which will eventually be localized.

Conflicts with extension ID/interface, double overlays, double xul/js function entries...
Gosh. All that and I never noticed; maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. ;) So, even though I had the PM Status Bar disabled those issues were alive? Just curious.
All the people who are using status-4-evar will unfortunately just have to ween themselves off of it...
I've removed Status-4-Evar. Consider me weened off.

Cheers.

No, if you had the Pale Moon status bar disabled, it wouldn't be an issue. When this integration is complete, though, you can no longer disable it - hence already putting it on the blocklist now, considering it would be an issue right now as well if you have both enabled.

:!: It seems that there was an error in the forum.

Yesterday i post the follow comment (luck i backup everything):
Thanks Moonchild by the explanation.
And repeat, if need help with the translation to spanish, count to me.

 ... If the future is the full integration of PM-status-bar with Palemoon,
the translation of actual addon will be in the language-pack of Palemoon? :?:
But, apparently Moonchild post next to me, and both comments merge, replacing my text, but leaving my name.

PS: A message to forum administrator: Perhaps is necessary to number posts to be able to referred them correctly.

PS2: What is a Moongazer (my actual ranking in this forum)?
