Adding a search engine

Post by puppyX » 2026-03-14, 12:03

I'd like to add the gigablast search engine to my drop down list in PM. Have saved a bookmark but the option to add to the list is not available. How can it be added to the drop down in 'manage search engines' ?

I guess Gigablast doesn't support OpenSearch yet. You can try using the Search Engine Editor extension though: https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/searchengineeditor/

After installing the extension make a query in Gigablast first, then in the search result page right-click on the search field to see the new context menu option letting you create a search plugin.

The editor extension works and it even allows installation of the correct icon. Thanks for the help :)

Wow, Gigablast is back in action!? Nice.

They went dead a few years ago and I last checked it at 26/02/16: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.ph ... 23#p270423

Well, this is very confusing, because Gigablast has never came back, since it was closed back in 2023. Any website that claims to be Gigablast is impersonating the website name, even the one you linked, it doesn't display its source code, despite the official Gigablast had its source code shared to everyone. Their support email is "Support@torry.io", I went to check their website and, on paper, it doesn't look that bad, so why would they try to impersonate a not-so-popular search engine?! Odd.

Interesting... Thank you for your vigilance!

I pondered the same right away and sent that support address a request for the source which is just claimed to be hosted on Github but isn't linked.

They also seem to want to provide a "tor search index" more than anything else, but it's all very vague. I don't know what to think.

Gigablast is a bit weird.
Sometimes the results of any search returns a results page with chinese links. But so far today they are normal.
It only gives results in the 'All' section, News, Images and Videos don't work for me.

My goto search when I want to test a search is, 'ncmain.exe'.
(My goto computation when I want to test a calculator is '6 * 5'.)

By default, I try to keep JavaScript disabled.

gigablast does not work without enabling JavaScript.
So on gigablast.org I allowed JS (for gigablast.org).
And with that, I was allowed to perform a search, 'ncmain.exe'.

https://gigablast.org/search/?q=ncmain.exe

I while I am searching for "ncmain.exe", the results returned all dealt with "DuckDuckGo".
Now, how anyone conflates "ncmain.exe" with "DuckDuckGo" is beyond me.
(Even in a browser without any blocking, still get the same nonsense results.)

Wikipedia: Gigablast talks about gigablast.COM.
And while the webpage no longer exists, the (listed, at least) github webpage does.

My above search rolls over to:

Code: Select all

https://cdn.usefathom.com/?h=https%3A%2F%2Fgigablast.org&p=%2Fsearch%2F&r=&sid=KBDQKNEG&qs=%7B%22q%22%3A%22ncmain.exe%22%7D&cid=43330967
I'd be very suspect of this "gigablast".

https://cdn.usefathom.com/, "A Google Analytics alternative that’s simple & privacy-first".
(And you can bet on that ;-).)

gigablast has now stopped working for me. It officially ceased in 2023 so it's time to say goodbye to the extremely slow/inoperative clone I stumbled upon.

Time to try Qwant, Lukol & gibiru engines.
