need help understanding how to install from the Classic Add-ons Archive

Post by spongeboy » 2026-03-08, 20:31

hello pale moon people! i am new here and i've mostly got my pale moon set up to how i like it (and i am absolutely loving it, and i cannot believe i didn't know about this browster til yesterday).

i am really, really dumb when it comes to back-end computer stuff, so i need a little help. i'm trying to install some add-ons from the Classic Add-ons Archive (specifically this one: caa:addon/furigana-inserter) but when i click download, it comes up with the standard downloading ui rather than the one i'm used to when downloading addons in pale moon. could someone explain to me how to install add-ons from the Classic Add-ons Archive like i'm a ten year old? do i download it onto my pc and then like, drag it somewhere, or is there code i paste into a console somewhere, etc. etc. etc. help me!

i am an ultra noob so please be patient with me! i swear i searched the forum for answers before this, i just tend to need super specific, concrete instructions to actually understand something, lol.

I haven't added one from CAA for awhile, but I recall that I usually downloaded them to my Downloads folder and then in Pale Moon went to the main menu, File-Open File, and opened the file. You might have to adjust your Add-on security level in the Tools-Preferences-Security tab.

What it means is that the version you found isn't strictly compatible with Pale Moon due to the way older extensions did compatibility checking - sometimes it maybe a restartless extension (if it has a no-restart label on or near the description). You can still download the extension and manually install it from the addons page (Press Ctrl-shift-A, or open about:addons in a new tab or Tools menu->Addons. Click the hamburger menu on the addons page and do 'install addon from file').

For each extension page on CAA, you'll see a link that says 'View all x (number of) versions', which will take you to a list of all previous versions of that addon. The one that's directly compatible with Pale Moon will show an install button next to it rather than a download button.

In the end it doesn't matter, you can save an extension locally and then manually install like I said, or you can use an older version of the extension (which may lack features added later, or have bugs that were fixed later). See whatever works best.

Well nuts I was hoping for true detail, because I have not figured it out either. ForEx, and please correct any misunderstandings:
"The archive is not a website; instead it is a special-purpose add-on.
It is not listed at the regular add-ons site; Intead it is at www.XYZ. Go there and download / install the special-purpose archive-addon.
Inside PM, open the archive-addon by [ABC].
In the archive, browse / search by [DEF]."
Now you're almost ready for
For each extension page on CAA
Yes some of this info is in the forums, but a refresh under this post won't hurt.

Another way, right-click the Download button on add-on's page->Copy Link Location, paste in the URL bar and replace "action=download" with "action=install" and confirm with Enter.

What I do is right-click Install, choose Save as, and download the .xpi file. I then open it with an archive handler, open install.rdf and change the max version for Pale Moon to the current version (if the information is not there, I copy the information for it from a theme installer). I replace the revised install.rdf file and drag and drop the modified.xpi file onto the window with the add-ons list.

This one is probably my favorite one of them all from that list: file-and-folder-shortcuts-1.4.1-signed.By Yaman Roumani

It's been a Looong time since I installed this, but if whats left of my memory serves me, you can choose almost any taskbar to put it in: Top,Bottom etc.
