Open With Edge, IE, Chrome, and More – for Windows only?

Post by Fenchelina » 2026-01-13, 13:29

Here in the forum, I found a reference to the extension "Open With Edge, IE, Chrome, and More". Indeed a quick way to open pages in other browsers when compatibility issues arise in Palemoon – as is unfortunately often the case.
Sadly, this discovery seems to have come too late for me, namely at a time when I am about to switch to Linux: This extension seems to support Windows paths only. On Linux, it cannot find any of the installed browsers and also rejects any manual entries.
Although it would be so important, the extension has not been updated for 6 years. Is there any alternative or a way to enter Linux paths there after all?

Have you got any examples I could see since you didn't put any in a link? I'm asking because I use 64 bit linux Pale Moon (GTK2).

Normally, when I run across a page or a site which Pale Moon will not render properly, I just copy the address of the page or site in question, open my backup browser (Waterfox), manually put the address of the page in question in the Navigation Toolbar, left click my mouse and Waterfox will open the page (or site) for me.

I would use "Open With" in the Classic Add-on Archive.
If you don't have the archive installed, go here:

https://github.com/JustOff/ca-archive/releases
Once installed use the below in the address bar.

caa:addon/open-with
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dell Precision 15 7550
Windows 10 Pro. 22H2 19045.5965
Xeon W-10885M
64 GB DDR4 ECC memory (128 GB max)
1 TB Samsung 9100 Pro M2 SSD (Main)
2 TB Samsung 9100 Pro M2 SSD (storage)
500 GB Corsair T500 storage M2 SSD (6 TB max)
Intel onboard GPU 1080p
Quadro RTX 5000 Max-Q GPU 4K

I use the add-on Bypass Cloudflare with Firefox Cookies 7.1 to view pages that have compatibility issues with Pale Moon. This add-on also works in Linux (tested in "Linux Mint 19.3 - 32Bit").

https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=32098&start=100#p260409

I've made this add-on to solve another problem, but it has two options that can also be used for this purpose:

1. Browse Current Page ( ONLY ) in "Backup Browser"
2. Open Custom URL in "Backup Browser"

These two options can be accessed by click on the add-on button.

There are two settings you need to make before using the add-on to open the current page (or a given URL) in "Backup Browser":

1. Set the path for the "Backup Browser" App
2. Disable HTTP Observer

These two settings can be accessed by right-click on the add-on button.

Note: The other two settings displayed by right-click on the add-on button are not needed to use the add-on for your purpose.

Note: This add-on can only be used with a single "Backup Browser". For "Bypass Cloudflare with Firefox Cookies", only a "Backup Browser" with a "cookies sqlite" database compatible with this add-on can be used, but for your purposes, any "Backup Browser" may be used (I have not tested this statement, but I have no reason to doubt that it is correct).

Examples? I use Linux Mint (Mate) and also use 64 bit linux Pale Moon (GTK2).
The extension https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/openwithieedge/ offers me in its settings InternetExplorer and Edge – as if we were on Windows – as well as Chrome and Vivaldi; the path specifications are empty in each case. If, for example, I enter there "/usr/bin/vivaldi-stable" or "/opt/vivaldi/vivaldi" and close the settings dialog, the icon's selection list remains empty. When I reopen the dialog, it looks as if I hadn't changed anything: the path line is empty again. This means that I am unable to define an alternative browser and therefore cannot select one with this extension. In Windows everything works intuitively.

Of course, I can also copy the URL manually each time, open another browser, and paste the URL into the address bar there. That's how I've always done it "on foot", but I've often wished for a function that would do it with a single click. – And indeed, a tool for this purpose has been around for quite some time now, and its operation does not seem to be particularly complicated. Except that the developer designed it exclusively for Windows and does not allow any entries that do not correspond to the Windows path format.

I clicked on the link to the page. The version of Pale Moon it last worked on was for version 28. Granted, it does not work for Pale Moon in Linux because it was designed for Windows.

The maintainer of this extension is a user named, "riiis". If you want a linux extension for Pale Moon in the link you provided, you will have to get in touch with riiis, if this person is still active on here and ask this person if they would make this extension available for Linux in Pale Moon. And riis might be hidden as a member or is no longer active.

That sounds a bit as if it were my own personal pleasure to want to use such an extension. I do think that a larger number of users would be interested in being able to quickly switch to a more compatible browser if necessary – the more cumbersome this is, the greater the temptation to use that other browser from the outset.
I think a feature like this would be a simple way to make Palemoon's existing weak points more manageable. A failure to neglect such extensions simply because the previous developer no longer bothers with them.

P.S.: I received a tip on how to find the Firefox extension “Open with” in the lost pre-WebEx version. It also works with Linux ...so it is feasible independent of Windows.

Thank you very much for the link which led me to the compatible "Open with" extension. My own search for it only ever brought up the Firefox WebExtension.
This "Open with" extension also works under Linux.

Off-topic:
And apologies for my double posting in two subforums: Reading that only extension authors should post here, I actually wanted to delete this entry, just couldn't manage it. But now I have received the solution I was looking for right here.

I have Open With 6.8.6 installed on Linux Mint for a few years now.
I thought I got it from our extensions page, but obviously not.
The link under the "more" page directs you to the developers Github page. (now archived)

I hope its of some use..

EDIT.
I have the extension backed up..

It is common to think of our own time as standing at the apex of civilisation from which the deficiencies of preceding ages may patronisingly be viewed in the light of what is assumed to be progress. The reality is that in the long perspective of history the present century will not hold an enviable position unless the second half is to redeem its first.

PSA: Not sure why 2 identical topics were made, both in incorrect boards, but I've merged them and put them in the correct place.

I didn't test it, but I think if you create a link with .exe in the name (or even path) it will work.
