Question for those using JustOff's uBo

Unread post by ron_1 » 2024-12-22, 13:18

Yesterday I created a new profile, and since adding JustOff's uBo I'm having a problem with one of the filters (see image). I can't check in my old profile because I already deleted it (something I usually don't do, the one time I do it, it figures I get a problem). Is anybody else getting this? I've been wondering lately if it's time to switch to the other uBo. Maybe it is.

Right under "Built-in (6/6), it is listed just like your's is and I see the same thing you are seeing.

Okay, so it's not just me. I wonder if this is another broken link to the filter's web address??

I checked with old PM32 portable install which has 1.16.4.30 that points to gorhill's github page as the homepage (I think that is JustOff's version). The filter update worked for me, including all the built-in lists.

FWIW, before you update/switch to UCyborg's version... I am getting hundreds of either "Invalid cosmetic filter" or "Invalid network filter" messages in the Logger (ver 1.16.6b1). I have not tested in a clean profile though.

I'm not seeing that today. I think you would need to check in a clean profile, as changes you make in about:config can block filter rules from being applied. Also maybe you could list some of the websites where this occurs.

Edit: I do see some invalid filter messages in the logger when I visit on Reddit now. But in a clean profile using Justoff's uBlock version 1.16.4.30 I get the same invalid filter messages on the same Reddit page.

That's not specific to 1.16.6b1, if anything, 1.16.4.30 will spit slightly higher number of those errors when parsing filters when filter lists are being updated. The engine is simply hopelessly outdated and that's not going to change unless someone competent takes over the project.

The reality is, uBO on Pale Moon died the day Gorhill dropped support.

I am not seeing any problem with uBO. I just updated all the filters, including custom ones that I added.

Going back to the original problem, I just checked it again and now the broken link and caution triangle are gone, so whatever the issue was, it went away as fast as it appeared.

To be honest, I haven't kept up with the different discussions about uBlock Origin versions (newer or otherwise), and presume the one I am using was installed from the link in the Pale Moon Add-ons over a year ago when I first got Pale Moon. But in case it is useful in any way, this is what I see.

Same for me as well.
Off-topic:
I went to the PM Add-ons to satisfy my curiosity and looked up Adblock Latitude which I used before I switched over to UBO. ABL says Compatibility up to version.........."31".

You got JustOff's version, which is what I use.

I'd urge all of you to:

1. Carefully backup the various sub-sections (export My Filters, My Rules etc.). Also export the main settings ("Back up to file") which contain everything, but do NOT reimport that. Keep it only as a reference for your filterlist selections, they are listed somewhere in there. You could also take a screenshot of your Filterlist section, as a visual guide.
2. Uninstall JustOff's version asap: malicious/badware list is not working, amongst others.
3: Remove all relevant about:config entires
4. Close Pale Moon and delete the YourProfile\extension-data\ublock0.sqlite file
5. Install either UCyborg's or AstroSkipper's version.
6. Make sure to not add outdated or abandoned filterlists in your new uBO (JustOff's version includes some of these). Leave the first, "Built-in" section as-is and enabled. It should update properly.
7. Optionally install RealityRipple's excellent deCDN while you're at it. More info in this topic.

These important uBO Built-in filters will now auto-update, along with several other fixes. Yes, mostly filterlist-related fixes but still valid, relevant and important ones.

I understand what you're saying, but it's a bit grim and exaggerated. We are all using it to great effect for years. There are no important signs of functionality loss. Sure, a new developer/maintainer would be nice. JustOff coming back would be great too, given those circumstances.

It still works just fine though.
