Post by seriousness » 2023-09-13, 10:11

Hello,

is there any use in still having Palefill Add-on installed?

I think it comes down to personal preference.

I use to have it installed, but I uninstalled it and haven't missed it. I think I used it to install uBlock Origin, but something changed and I didn't need Palefill any longer.

If I recall, I think I used it for this site below where I had a continuous loading circle and now I don't even with Palefill uninstalled.

It never worked for me. I always had to use FF to download anything from GitHub.

Just for kicks, I went to my extensions in linux Pale Moon and uninstalled uBlock Origin. Then I went to the link I posted about Github, downloaded and then re-installed uBlock Origin. No problems with the download.

Palefill was meant to provide partial support for WebComponents. Since v32·1, which had released in March, Pale Moon supports these well enough natively that the extension has become redundant. For me, the only site where I needed Palefill was Fanbox, so I have disabled it and noticed no changes.

Could we please receive a definitive obsolete or not answer from someone in the know? It'd be much appreciated.

Yep, https://martok.github.io/palefill/ says:
Palefill is developed and tested on the most recently released version of the Pale Moon browser. New features and fixes always target this browser and the then-current state of the web.
But the last changelog is from May 18, when Pale Moon was v32.2.0.

I am still noticing some improvement with Palefill enabled. Try this, for example:

1. Disable Palefill and visit this page
2. Scroll a bit down to the Table of contents and click on one of them i.e. Frequently Asked Questions
3. The page goes back on top: wrong
4. Enable Palefill and refresh the page
5. Repeat step 2: works as expected

Yes, I have also noticed that Pale Moon doesn't support those anchor links on GitHub.

I believe Palefill still is useful for certain specific situations. I was trying to download a .xpi file (for the Classic Add-ons Archive, iirc) directly from GitHub for a fresh installation of PM Portable, and for some reason I wasn't able to do so without Palefill.

However, I uninstalled Palefill shortly afterwards, and have since been browsing without it on that PM Portable install.

Thanks for all the answers. My concern was mainly, that Palefill could break sites that don't need it anymore.

If fireworks, champagne and beautiful girls were expected from a browser extension then yes, it's a major disappointment.

So: my heartfelt thanks to Martok (and JustOff for the original extension) for his extremely helpful work on Palefill.

I have the latest Palefill installed (1.27) and the Martok Palefill Releases page isn't loading properly for me. No stylesheet and the download link is missing, which if I remember correctly that is what Palefill was for. So it's kind of a mess.

If you are talking about this page, then it works fine with or without Palefill. With or without being logged in to GitHub. I don't know why you are so quick to jump to conclusions.

Most probably you are either not using the latest Pale Moon, or something else is messing things up on your system.

If you are indeed using PM 31.3 as your signature suggests, then you can't really blame others.

Not that the tone of your comment deserves a response, but right page and signature updated with date so you can't make assumptions.

Yes, I prefer content over subjective "tone" and signatures. You still haven't provided any relevant info on your "Palefill is a mess" issue.

As for "assumptions"... your uncalled-for signature edit made sure to declare to the greater part of world you will be permanently using an outdated version of Pale Moon, by updating to PM 32.4.1 on the 10th of December 2023.

Even though I am American, this is why I usually write the date in the format of YYYY-MM-DD in written conversation.

I definitely agree that the ISO-style YYYY-MM-DD is a really good format, and also has the advantage of having the month and day in the same order as what we Americans are used to. Even a date like 9/11 still makes sense, you just write it 2001-09-11 instead of 09/11/2001. I actually used it as the date format on a forum I once ran, and also used to set my computer's clock to display that way just because I liked it better. The big downside to the European date format is that it looks deceptively similar to what we're used to, but swaps month and day. When I do use American date format, I usually don't enter it as raw numbers, but rather write it out verbally, like, October the 14th, 2023. I try to spell out the month or at least an abbreviation of it to make sure no one could confuse it with the day. I even notice that when people say the date verbally, the 14th of October and October the 14th are used interchangeably, so that even though the order is encoded in a certain way in different regions when using raw numbers, people say it both ways in speech by just saying the name of month all the time.
