How do you find an ad blocker?

Unread post by Satai Delenn » 2022-12-23, 18:22

I am NOT a technological person. Under Tools, I tried to go to extension and then I tried add ons. I tried to look for a free ad blocker, but nothing is coming up under search results. What am I doing wrong? In Firefox, all I have to do under those areas is enter "ad blocker" and stuff comes up, and I can choose what I want. Why does this not work under these areas for Pale Moon?

Thanks.

You need to look in Pale Moons' Extensions listings under the sub-section for Privacy & Security... see: https://addons.palemoon.org/extensions/ ... -security/

In that list you will find Adblock Latitude... a fork of Adblock Plus made specifically for the Pale Moon: https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/adblock-latitude/

And... a legacy version of uBlock Origin suitable for Pale Moon, however the link to GitHub download site given is not functioning at present... so read this recent forum thread for explanation and another link to download uBlock Origin v1.16.4.30 from... see: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=29212

OK, thank you both! I tried going under "extensions," but when I put "ad blocker" under the "search" function," it returned 0 results.

Now that I've added it, is there anything else I need to do? As I said, I'm NOT technological.

'It' being? Now go to Filterlists and add a bunch of adblocking filter subscriptions following instructions for the adblocker you're using, which you'll find from their respective homepage (which in turn can be searched for online).

You don't need any 'technical' computer knowledge... but you do need to do some basic reading... :)

If you installed Adblock Latitude, the fork of Adblock Plus (ABP), read ABP's 'Getting Started - First Steps' article here: https://adblockplus.org/getting_started#firststeps... which explains how to select and add filterlists... and includes the link to ABP's own filterlist site that offers a simple selection of lists to use.

If you installed uBlock Origin (uBO), then out-of-the-box uBO operates in Easy Mode aimed at those who prefer an 'install-and-forget approach'... and already has a selection of filterlists installed and activated. These pre-installed filterlists will automatically update without you having to do anything further (as will any additional filterlists you might activate or add later).

However, Raymond Hill's uBO is is much more than just an Ad Blocker and it is well worth reading-up on how to operate uBO's interface and dashboard, use built-in tools like the excellent 'Element Blocker', and later perhaps try out uBO's Advanced Mode?

OK, thank you. At this point, I don't remember what I added. I am the type who needs the EASIEST thing. The "add and forget, doesn't need to DO anything but add and forget" type of thing.

I just tested the link to uBlock Origin at github and it works for me. This is the address I used:
