This question I asked here for my friend as he doesn't want waiting for moderation approval. I'm lucky enough since I only have to set enable MSE for WebM to enjoy 4k videos on youtube but my friend isn't. He recalls there used to be a guide on the internet about how to use VLC plugin to play youtube videos on legacy Firefox (very old Firefox indeed as it was still in the Flash's day when there was a trend to use VLC plugin to play Flash videos but don't have Flash installed because Flash is non-free software) but can no longer find this article now. He wanted to try using VLC plugin to play youtube videos to see if he could get better quality than the browser's built-in. Please help.
p/s: the plugin is installed but doesn't work, it does nothing, the youtube videos still played by the browser's built-in player.

Re: How to use VLC plugin on Pale Moon?
You do not need a plugin to view YouTube videos now because it is now using HTML5, which needs no plugin.

If your friend uses Windows, then there's a better alternative to VLC: "MPV Player".nguyen9173 wrote: ↑2022-06-15, 16:34He recalls there used to be a guide on the internet about how to use VLC plugin to play youtube videos on legacy Firefox
I made an Add-On with which you can play Youtube Video without opening the Youtube page:
1. If you are not on the Youtube page (with Video):
- "Ctrl Key" held down + "Click" on a Link to Youtube Video (e.g. Link from Google search results page) = Opens MPV Player with the Video from that Link.
2. If you are not on the Youtube page (with Video):
- "Click" on the Button opens a "prompt box" where you enter the URL of the Youtube Video page ( e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXXXXXXXXXX ) = Opens MPV Player with the Video from that URL.
3. If you are already on the Youtube page (with Video):
- "Click" on the Button = Opens MPV Player with the Video from that Youtube page.
Right Click on Button:
Ctrl Key held down + Click on a Link to Youtube Video:
Best available quality:
Best quality - Less than 1440p:
Best quality - Less than 1440p - With h264 or h265 codec (fps <= 30) - If available:

To work, this Add-on needs the following software and settings:
Software :
1. MPV Player

( 32 bit OR 64 bit )
2. yt-dlp
- Link for Windows 32 bit: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releas ... lp_x86.exe
- Link for Windows 64 bit: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releas ... yt-dlp.exe
3. FFmpeg
- Link for Windows 32 bit: https://www.filehorse.com/download-ffmpeg/53295/

- Link for Windows 64 bit: https://www.filehorse.com/download-ffmpeg/53296/
( https://dl2.filehorse.com/win/video-sof ... static.zip )
Settings:
Extract the file (posted by me) Play Youtube Video in MPV Player - Add-On + Desktop Folder.zip then extract the file Play Youtube Video in MPV Player.zip to the Desktop ( make Play Youtube Video in MPV Player folder ). Copy the programs from the Links below (MPV Player and FFmpeg must be extracted first) to this folder ( Play Youtube Video in MPV Player ), so that you get the configuration from one of the pictures posted below (Windows 32 bit OR Windows 64 bit, depending on your operating system).
Please note: after you extract the FFmpeg archive, the ffmpeg.exe and ffprobe.exe files are in the bin folder.
Windows 32 bit:
Windows 64 bit:

Re: How to use VLC plugin on Pale Moon?
A fixed version of the Add-On ( Version II ).
The "Click on Button" option didn't work when the active page was one with search results for a "Youtube Video" in a search engine other than Google (e.g. DuckDuckGo).
Also, "Ctrl Key held down + Click on a Link" did not always work as expected.
I have fixed those bugs.
Download link ( for Add-on Version II ):

***********
Important clarifications:
• Do not move or rename the folder Play Youtube Video in MPV Player.
• The yt-dlp software must be updated (replaced in Play Youtube Video in MPV Player folder) every time a new version is released, as it keeps up with the code changes made to the Youtube page.
