Request for clarification for disabled add-ons

Unread post by Moonchild » 2022-05-07, 09:44

OK, so while updating some of my extensions on the add-ons site I've come across a pretty extensive list of listed-yet-disabled add-ons, and would like to request clarification of the status of these add-ons:
  • Why was it disabled? By whom (if known)? Should it be reconsidered?
  • If it was arbitrary (by you-know-who) without good reason, would the author be happy with it being re-enabled?
  • If it was not arbitrary but rather due to issues with the extension, will there be an update to fix the extension to resolve this status or should it just be removed?
This is so I can clean up the site and reduce unnecessary blocking of extensions that would be useful.

Here's the list:
  1. Bookmarks Sidebar with Panels
  2. Bookmarks Toolbar More Visible
  3. Color Identifier
  4. Color Picker & Converter
  5. Context Menu Image Saver
  6. Directory Up
  7. Downloads Statusbar
  8. Downloads: Show in Window, Tab, or Sidebar
  9. Drag & Drop: Search, Open Links, & Open Images
  10. Forecast & Weather on the Button
  11. Google Translator for Pale Moon
  12. Left Side Dropdowns
  13. Phoebus Dev Helper
  14. Popup Dictionaries With Audio
  15. Sage Reader
  16. Self-Destructing Cookies for Pale Moon
  17. Session History
  18. Sidebar Tools
  19. Super Start Speed Dial
  20. Theme Compatibility Provider
  21. Theme Maker
  22. Toggle Night Mode
  23. Translate This Page, Text, or Link
  24. Turbo Downloader
  25. Vertical Toolbar for Pale Moon
  26. Zoom Pages Tool

Most of those are by riiis (disabled by Tobin):

Phoebus Dev Helper
IIRC the purpose of this extension was to switch the Add-ons Site URL preferences to the addons-dev subdomain.

In the case of "Color Identifier", I believe the reason was somewhat arbitrary, see this thread.

Someone disliked that "Color Identifier" uses a status-bar panel rather than a moveable toolbar button, so he made a fork more to his liking ("ColorPili") where the status-bar panel was removed (versus made optional).
You-know-who chose to replace the one with the other.

I don't use either extension, but I'm a bit fond of those old status-bar panels and never thought of them as "breakage" that needed to be "fixed", but more a matter of personal taste. So at the time, I was sorry to see "Color Identifier" removed.

I was wondering what had become of Self-Destructing Cookies. I had used it when I had first found Pale Moon, but it was deleted from the add-ons site sometime before XII 2020, when I migrated to Linux. I have been using Cookie Masters since, but SDC had worked better for me. I am glad to hear that it is coming back.

Don't jump yet. it depends on whether riiis still wants it or not.

Ah right. Well licensing and branding issues are a problem. Original icons could be OK if they are public domain but I don't know if they are.
So this really does need to be looked at case-by-case.

Crush Those Cookies does the main job of SDC and has a lot simpler code. I've been using it since it was first released. The dev used to be on here. Cookies Exterminator is similar with a bit more functionality added. I've used it in old Waterfox and I think SeaMonkey. Either one is good but I like simple when it does the job.

Michaell beat me to it by a few moments, so I changed my post a bit, but...

These are the links:
Cookies Exterminator (& forum)
Crush Those Cookies (& forum)
(Don't know If it matters to you, but apparently wost_ the CTC author is no longer involved with the extension or Pale Moon, and took down its GitHub repo long ago.)

I am still using Downloads: Show in Window, Tab, or Sidebar. I find it useful.
I use Turbo Download Manager (an old Firefox extension). Not sure if it is the same as Turbo Downloader.

You could try GetEmAll - forked from the popular DownThemAll.

What about just replacing bad icons with placeholders? Extensions with ambigious name also dont look like a problem to me. (Add-ons have Descriptions)

That is something the addon author needs to do since the site simply picks up whatever icon has been set. Ambiguous names aren't the only issue as noted with 'slug squatting' as well. Slug here refers to the short name used in the URL of the addon link (for example, in my DownThemAll fork GetemAll, the link is https://addons.palemoon.org/addon/getemall/ and the slug here is getemall. So both name and slug may refer to something totally different, unless it is an authorized and license compliant continuation of the original.

You can probably find it on binaryoutcast.com somewhere.

The icons used in the original extension that was forked, these are not covered by the source redistribution license (since they are artwork and not source code) unless the author explicitly grants the right to reuse them.

Theme Compatibility Provider was mine, it was a shim to add some extra compat styles on Firefox-only themes in the Pale Moon 27(? I forget) range. It's no longer compatible and can be safely removed.

Thanks I'll do that now.
