Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?

Dissenter lists "Firefox" but not sure how compatible it is. Made some attempt at installing the Firefox extension to Pale Moon but failed. Not sure if the quality of the directions was a problem, or USER ERROR.
At this point I've given up. My concern is that others may also, given the impediments.

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
So how long has it been since you contacted them about it, any reply?
Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
This looks like it is a WebExtension, and thus not compatible with Pale Moon. They would have to re-write it as a XUL extension in order for Pale Moon users to use it.Tony_Flair wrote:Dissenter lists "Firefox" but not sure how compatible it is.

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
Gab has a #dissenter hashtag where I assume all support requests like this are supposed to go. I made support request on Gab using this hashtag at the same time I made this forum post. No reply to the request on Gab at this time. Also, FYI, in case anyone is on Gab/Dissenter, popular Youtube blogger Styxenhexenhammer (or however it's spelled) has made mention of the Palemoon/Dissenter issue, so I'm not the only one who's mentioning it. I was hoping someone that is using Pale Moon with Dissenter could give me a 1st hand and easy answer, i.e. "You're doing "X" wrong.".satrow wrote:So how long has it been since you contacted them about it, any reply?

Good to know. I'll mention it to someone at 1st opportunity.Nigaikaze wrote:This looks like it is a WebExtension, and thus not compatible with Pale Moon. Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
Today, just now, I read that Firefox has "dropped" (banned, whatever) the Dissenter App from whatever repository they use. Chrome has done something similar.
Has Pale Moon considered what they are going to do, if anything, with regard to "Dissenter"? It would be a good idea to publish something to refer general Users like myself to. I know that Pale Moon has a "ideology" of running the software as light on resources as possible, and that's probably a reflection of the Developers. I wonder if the Developers have an opinion on Dissenter, one way or the other, and would either attempt to work with it, or shun it, as other software has done.

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
What does this mean in actual practice though? I don't know how things work. Do you allow extensions (or whatever) to be "published"? Does "Pale Moon" actually do anything in terms of supporting other projects? Is there a repository of "Pale Moon Approved" software?Moonchild wrote:We have no stance on "Dissenter".
I'm just a User trying to get this Dissenter thing to work. You can always just browse straight to Dissenter's URL and then past the URL of the page you want to discuss, but that's clunky. I hear talk about buttons, features, gizmos, who-knows-what, but Chrome won't allow it, now Mozilla won't allow it, and I'd like to simply try to get the whole "Dissenter experience" whatever that is. I assumed it was an extension that gave you a button so that when you went to a URL you wanted to "Dissent" on (say a Youtube channel) there would be a button available to click. Not sure. I've only read about it and have never seen it for myself. Which is what I'm trying to do here.
I don't want to bug the Developer(s), but at the same time I don't want to just quit either.
Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
It means we do not police what extensions users use be them submitted to the Add-ons Site or not based on political or corporate ideology (assuming there is a difference these days). Merely on a basic legal or stability/security basis. If it harms the user materially like in the case of malware, is illegal like hacking/fraud committing/stolen code, or it busts the target application for any reason on a technical level and nothing is done to fix it despite attempts to inform the developer of it happening. Only then will the target application blocklist and direct actions by the Add-ons Team (or Phoebus Administration) come into play.
The Pale Moon (and other allied UXP application) Add-ons Site is ran as an open system as is the very software that I created to run it. TRUE open system. It isn't nor will ever be a walled garden "app" store situation like present day AMO or the Chrome Web Store.
If the gab people want to make a xul-based extension for Pale Moon and allied UXP applications then they are perfectly free to do so and they can host it on our Add-ons Sites or get a simple external listing and run their own infrastructure for it. It is their choice.
As an aside, it would be nice if the gab people would make their site more compatible with UXP web clients first. I have had issues with gab because they target Chrome-only in web development. Kinda pissed me off actually knowing exactly their goals for existing.

Would be great if Pale Moon managed to get the devs on board. We could crack the wall in the Mozilla / Google duopoly, really.

Hi

https://github.com/gab-ai-inc/gab-dissenter-extension/issues/51
Perhaps someone with more knowledge of the inner working of browser extensions will review this, especially the second link and the links to code commits there, but in my eyes it might be a good idea to ban it. It wouldn't be the first extension which turned into a privacy breach to collect data.

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
There is no point in banning it from the Pale Moon side, because as long as it only exists as a WebExtension, it'll never function with Pale Moon.karlkracher wrote:in my eyes it might be a good idea to ban it.

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
The other shoe drops.. The situation is far more complex than the initial Google/Mozilla authoritarianism that it was first presented as here in the thread.
Even though Google and Mozilla's decision to ban the WebExtension is hypocritical as fuck over the whole tracking/data collection thing even IF the service isn't storing or using any data outside of the query parameter which we don't know as of yet.. I might make the same decision if this was done in an update to an extension but I would try to work with the developers about the default setting first. I question if Google or Mozilla even bothered.
The issue of today's world is stuff that sends URLs to a server for every request BY DEFAULT is going to be a hot topic regardless of what or how if at all the data from the request is used or stored or sold. It was kinda a stupid mistake on their part to make that functionality, which by all means might be legit, the default behavior. People are touchy about that sort of thing especially if it didn't do that before.
NOW if they did make a new XUL Extension for Pale Moon or other UXP Applications I would seriously request that the default behavior be on demand when the user clicks the button or whatever. For the other issues it would be up to the user to decide if they trust the service to use any potential data responsibly. However, IF they stood fast on the default still being to send all navigated sites to the service then I would want to find out more about what data they collect and how that is used beyond the query parameter. If it is proven they have ulterior motives then that would be a big factor in how something is handled if it could be considered on the periphery of being malware.
So yeah, not as clear cut as one could be lead to believe. In any event, there is no XUL Extension only an incompatible WebExtension.. So all this is moot in the context of Pale Moon or other UXP applications until such time it exists in our sphere.

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
So, ultimately we have no stance on "Dissenter" at the moment
The extensions doesn't apply to us.
If it becomes applicable, we'll vet it like any other extension and will likely be refused for publication unless the default settings are made more privacy friendly.

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
Apparently, according to google and mozilla, the banning is all about content and nothing but content.
https://twitter.com/getongab/status/111 ... 84/photo/1
...which contains this:
...and google say the same:
We've seen their definition of "hate speech" in the way that they treated Brendan Eich and James Damore.
Furthermore, Gab says that:

so mozilla violates its own policy about working with extension developers to resolve problems:Google and Mozilla have provided ZERO examples of ANY violations of their terms. They have given us ZERO chance to take action on any content that they claim does so.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefo ... extension/
Mozilla removed it. This can happen when issues are found during the review of the extension or theme, or the extension or theme has been abusing the terms and conditions for addons.mozilla.org. The developer has the opportunity to resolve the issues and make the add-on available again.
Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
I just took a look at https://dissenter.com/
Of course, it contains google spyware. Gab probably does, too. Quite ironic after being booted by google.
Btw, I also looked at the way that Dissenter works. It should be very easy to write a simple extension that makes things a little more convenient for the user by merely opening a new tab (after a button click) with the correct url to do the commenting on. That would eliminate privacy concerns. Can Pale Moon still use jpm extensions?

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
Political reasons. I knew it. I tried to play devil's advocate and those points are still valid but yeah.. No shock there. Expect it to get even more worse before it gets better.
HOWEVER, let's end it here before this thread goes out of control cause this isn't the proper place to discuss such things. You can always come to my channel on IRC for that.

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
So how exactly is this promoting an "Open Web", again? (don't answer, it's rhetorical)

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
The Gab people have changed the preferences of the webextension to not ping their servers by default and are now looking into better handling when it is enabled.
Good on them.
Also, they have been made aware of us so we will see if they make a XUL extension or not.
As for the question above a few posts back.. New jetpack extensions isn't a good idea. Jetpack in UXP serves two roles: powering DevTools and existing Add-ons SDK extensions in Phoenix-based browsers. It is still a piss poor technology and should NOT be used for new development of extensions.
THAT is our legacy extension technology if you want to use the term. It isn't going away in Pale Moon or Basilisk and I have given up that fight a while ago but it should be considered as just one of those things that sits in the corner and has no friends.
Additionally, it is not included BinOC projects like Interlink and unreleased Borealis. Indeed, is optional for all projects at build time but as stated, Jetpack is a dependency of DevTools but you can just disable it all.
I know, I was the one who made it possible. All hail overlay/toolkit extensions, the TRUE extension technology! Oh and bootstrap, if you must.

Re: Pale Moon Extension for Gab Dissenter?
This works fine for me. I haven't gotten around to studying extensions enough to know how to turn this into a proper one. Maybe somebody else would like to. I use "Open With" & set this bash script as one of the applications. It uses xclip, xdotool, and, of course, bash. If these aren't available for your platform, there are probably similar tools you can use. One of the keybinds for palemoon I changed with MenuWizard, but if it comes with a default for that (I forget), you could use the default instead. I'm using this in a buntu similar to Lubuntu, but this approach should work in anything:
Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash
url="$1"
dissent_url='https://dissenter.com/discussion/begin?url='"$url"
# store the present clipboard content
old_clipboard="$(xclip -selection clipboard -o)"
# put dissent url in clipboard
echo -n "$dissent_url"|xclip -selection clipboard -i
# keybind set with menuwizard to focus and select url
xdotool key Ctrl+Alt+l
sleep 0.5
# paste the url in
xdotool key Ctrl+v
# go to it
xdotool key Return
# restore the clipboard's old value
echo -n "$old_clipboard"|xclip -selection clipboard -i
