[Solved] Ghostery Add-on Update fails

Post by Iceqube » 2013-02-28, 19:59

Version 2.8.4 runs fine but fails to update to 2.9.1 with palemoon.
With original firefox 19.0 it does update.

Yes, I read http://www.palemoon.org/faq.shtml#Why_d ... s_not_work but maybe you are able to check why it fails - if it is related to the Add-on or your build?

@ Iceqube: Don't see your problem - just did update to Ghostery 2.9.1 - all as normal. Suggest you try simple Remove and Reinstall first. :)

Strange, Ghostery updated to 2.9.1 for me with no problems in the new PM 19.01 32bit version. Which PM version are you running, did you get any error messages when you tried to update? Another possibility is that the update site was down on your first attempt, also, as already suggested try uninstalling and reinstalling.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling of the Add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/down ... on-history
Error: "Ghostery could not be installed because Pale Moon cannot modify the needed file."
2.8.4 installs without problems, strange
Pale Moon Version 19.0.1.

Belated welcome to the forum! :) Odd as Ghostery 2.9.1 updated/works normally for both steviem1 and I on Pale Moon 19.0.1?

Two thoughts: i) is this lack of OS permissions/are you running Pale Moon as Administrator? ii) is error message from your AV suite - Norton can be very bloody minded with brand new versions - it still won't allow me to update GhosteryIE after 3 weeks and tickets in with Ghostery and Symantec. Grrrr!

Could try another fresh install direct from Ghostery: https://www.ghostery.com/download (Current Version column says 2.8.4 but have just tested and you do get 2.9.1). Just removed and did successful reinstall direct from Ghostery using alternative method below - so still unable to reproduce problem!

Alternative way to install any Add-on: Right-click on Ghostery link, select "Save Link As" option which will download Add-on .xpi file to your chosen download location - then can either drag & drop into any open browser page or in Add-ons manager click "Gearwheel" and use "Install Add-on From File option." Ghostery also has a responsive support page: https://getsatisfaction.com/ghostery that I have used in the past.

same result
strange all other Add-ons install/update without trouble

There are more complex reasons why this might be happening but was hoping not! Normal updates for other users would seem to rule out Ghostery Add-on's .xpi file and Pale Moon's updater - so probably left looking for a specific problem in your Pale Moon/profile set-up and just perhaps your OS (although having now updated Ghostery on XP/SP3, Vista/SP2 & Win7/SP1 this seems unlikely) Strange you can still install/update other Add-ons?

"Cannot modify the needed file" is normally related to files being "in use" and therefore locked (not released quickly enough for updating). One thing you can possibly try is not an update, but removal/reinstall of ghostery. Remove the old version of the add-on, then restart your system (to resolve any stale file locks) and then install the new version of ghostery.

.... Another possibility is to restart PM in ''Safe Mode'' ie, with all add-ons disabled and try to reinstall Ghostery.

Nope, still get the same error, will try other things later.
