PM 28.2.1 not opening url's with %20 in the address

Unread post by el es » 2018-12-02, 19:28

Sometimes when I try to view a maff file, URL encoding will convert the spaces to %20. PM 28.2.1 isn't able to handle that. PM does not respond at all to the enter key. This started with the update from 28.2.0 to 28.2.1. I do not think this is a Windows hang issue because Windows is putting the URL in the address bar.

Does it work if you try it in Pale Moon's safe mode? I haven't been able to replicate this with PM 28.2.1.

Thanx for the suggestion.
Safe mode cleared the problem.
I'm working my way through my extensions

Is there an indicator to know if you are in safe mode?
Is there a way to toggle back and forth between safe mode and standard?
Is there a standard restart key?

You're welcome.
el es wrote:Is there an indicator to know if you are in safe mode?
Not a blatantly obvious one. The only one I'm aware of is a notation saying "All add-ons have been disabled by safe mode" if you go into the add-ons manager whilst you're in safe mode. Someone else please chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.
el es wrote:Is there a way to toggle back and forth between safe mode and standard?
Not easily. Doing so requires restarting the browser. There's Help > Restart in Safe Mode to get into safe mode, and then there's a restart command (right off of the app button or File > Restart... if you're using the menu bar) that'll get you back into standard.
el es wrote:Is there a standard restart key?
Sorry, no, not that I'm aware of.

Thanx again.

I went through all my extensions except MozArchiver (because the problem was happening when I tried to open a maff file stored on my user). I disabled everything else in batches and then put it all back the way it was. The problem never recurred. A curious thing happened while I was doing this. When I started PM, instead of getting my usual about:privatebrowsing start page, I was getting something else with a box in the middle explaining what private browsing was.

This is still happening almost every time I double click on a maff file.

On the rare occasions that the maff file opens, I see the url getting pasted into the address box with the %20s in the url and the %20s being
immediately converted to spaces and the file opening correctly. If I bring up properties for the file in Windows Explorer and copy/paste the url into
the PM address box, the file opens correctly.

Looking back at my posts, I noticed that the only thing I hadn't done was disable MozArchiver. I somehow had the impression it was needed
for opening a file also. It turns out that MozArchiver is not needed to open a maff file. With MozArchiver disabled, the file opens every time
and I can see the %20s being converted in the address box.

Disabling MozArchiver solved the problem. MozArchiver worked correctly before the 28.2.1 update from 28.2.0.

This may be the wrong thread to bring this up. I typically run with admin priveleges and after the update to 28.2.0, UAC started popping up
every time I open PM AND every time I open a maff file - even when PM is already open. Also starting with that update, there is now a 15
second delay after UAC when I open PM, but not after UAC when I open a maff file and PM is already open.

I'm a retired mainframe software engineer. My experience in this arena is limited.

URLs can only be sent over the Internet using the ASCII character-set. It appears that the non-ASCII characters are being correctly encoded.

When it's working properly, all I typically see is a url, unencoded - with spaces, in the address bar after the page has been served.

Occasionally, I see an encoded url for a split second as the page is serving and then it displays unencoded.

When it doesn't work, the url remains in the address bar encoded and the page DOES NOT SERVE. I suspect, in those cases,
that the encoded url is not being transmitted. If I hit <enter> with the encoded url in the address bar, nothing happens.

I don't know who is doing the encoding - Windows or PM or both. The encoding appears to be working. I think PM is sometimes failing to
complete the job and send the string.

Every instance of this problem has been when trying to open a MAFF file.

Please see my previous post regarding MozArchiver's involvement.

MAFF files won't open for me with MozArchiver disabled. They never did. I don't know what the difference is.

For future reference -
About:Support has 2 boxes you can click to restart PM either in safe mode or normally.
