Smart Search doesn't work in PM28

Hi All!

SmartSearch 3.20.1 (the last version compatible with the PM) doesn't work with PM28 anymore.

The menu is still there, the quick searches are still shown - but selecting a word(s) and then trying a search doesn't do anything. (Expected: the selected quick search engine/dictionary/etc is launched in a new tab.)

I'm very sad

P.S. Win7/x64.

P.S. Just auto-updated the Firefox on my other (Ubuntu) system. ... Can anybody fix SmartSearch? I do not want to suffer trying to use that pile of *beep*. ... Please? ... It is a very useful add-on.

Honestly, I have forgotten how to download the XPIs off the Mozilla's add-on servers.

Simply browsing to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/smartsearch/ gives the generic dummy error message about version incompatibility. (I know it is a phony message, because I could in the past install and use in PM add-ons which AMO claimed to be incompatible.)

They actually suggest as replacement the "Context Search Origin" add-on (but it likewise can't be installed due to version numbers).

It is not the same. Very much not the same. QuickContextSearch is another interface to the installed "search engines". The SmartSearch uses the easily editable and extensible keyword search bookmarks.

The SmartSearch page recommends the "Context Search Origin" https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/context-search-we/, which might be a suitable replacement - but I have no idea how to install it, or whether it is compatible with PM at all.

(AMO sucks, in general, & then they compound it with sniffing, so no telling what one may or may not see.)

Interesting extension Dummy00001, now I'll have to check it out... I use Selected Search btw (less clicks - it uses the Search Engines).

looks like similar functionality to me. you can also install additional search engines that would show up in Quick Context Search just like you would for SmartSearch, and with keywords as well. for example, you can put imdb as a search engine, and when you highlight a movie name and search for it with QCS, you will be directed to the search result of that movie on imdb.

hey sorry, i stand corrected. i have a second addon (Organize Search Engines) that does what i mistakenly attributed to Quick Context Search above. so 2 addons to get the same result as you do with one, but i still prefer the layout of QCS.
