Block content extension (js,css,iframe,video,font,....)

Unread post by M J Highlander » 2018-03-21, 22:44

Block download of any of the following:
Image, Script, Stylesheet, Font (@font-face), Audio/Video, IFrame, Object (like flash and java applets)

This does not work by deleting the content from DOM after download, there will be no download because the request will be denied!

2 layers of blocking available:
-active blocking of file requests: block content and avoid a request to the server, thus speeding up page load.
-permissions: allows blocking of only third-party off-site content.

in many cases just blocking frames (which breaks some sites; i admit) would get rid of many ads!

bonus option: block sending of referer.

Dude, if you want to start writing extensions for Pale Moon I would ask you to please stop these drive-by-xpi files and follow: http://developer.palemoon.org/Add-ons:Site/Submit

i don't know how to do:
You should submit a request to the Add-ons Team (via the forum's PM system) with the following information

Thanks for providing this plugin. I've been using ImageBlock 3.1, which works, but is now deprecated. My testing confirms that yours works equally well.

By any chance can you add a whitelist capability? (even if it could only handle a single panel of 10 or 12 sites).

I commonly block all images on news and tech sites. But a few sites, like NewEgg and Amazon, aren't very useful without images. And it's a bother turning blocking off and back on.

Since you can already block an entire site (via URL), I would think that you have most of what would be needed. The result would then be beyond what others have implemented.

Anyway, I thought I would ask.

@ M J Highlander

A warm and friendly welcome to Palemoon :D
Thank you for your your extension "Block Content"

I have just waded through the various "NoScript" threads here and elsewhere, and was tipped off in Want to talk about NoScript? Post here. by JoeyG

+1! It does a nice job of blocking stuff with everything checked. But to be practical, IMO, it's got to have site specific exceptions allowed. I wonder if it would be possible to use the browser's built-in site preferences for this? For the UI part, putting buttons to the right of each setting which maybe open the browser's site preferences or the addon's own list if you go that way. I can think of advantages of using the browser's own settings if that is feasible.

And the URL Matching box could use a more info link button because it isn't obvious whether it blocks those sites completely or what, as well as the formatting.

How does "Block Content" play with ...
Adblock Latitude
uMatrix
uBlock Origin

I only use ABL at the moment ?

uMatrix is my real world day-to-day content stopper (in block all, allow needed mode). You don't need anything else with it, but I do have uBlock with it in some profiles.

Haven't used ABL but did install ABPrime along with BlockContent. The idea is AB' w/ EasyList catches ads and such, mostly where 3rd party stuff is allowed. And Block Content blocks everything else. uBlock could cover just the ABL/ABPr part, or it could actually do it all too. It would overkill IMO to use anymore than 2 of these 4. Choose one of either the AB-type or UBlock, then pair that with one of either Block Content or uMatrix or {NoScript+Request Policy}. For now, I'd say Block Content is OK as a standby, or for people who can't handle the more powerful ones.

@ NotWorthKnowing
Thank you for your feed back :)
Your tips are duly noted in my research folders

uBlockO and uMatrix had me bluffed until I watched 2 YouTubes by "The Hated One"
How to use uMatrix to protect your online privacy & improve security
How to use uBlock Origin advanced user mode tutorial 2018

According to reply by "The Hated One" in Comments ... uBlockO and uMatrix will play together provided only one has Global scripts. Otherwise browser might crash

Currently I am using ABL but on too many sites web pages are awash with Videos and ABL just doesn't cut-the-mustard.
Usually I don't read YouTube comments but both Videos have some good tips/comments by the presenter.
Warning! The presenter uses a couple of f.bombs ... if anyone is offended

I learned that ...
  • uMatrix . . . . . PRIVACY
  • uBlock Origin . . . SECURITY
I will try "Block Content" on its own in the next day or two. ;)

So, I installed UMatrix today and I have weird issue. Perhaps someone else knows how to fix this.

Before installing UMatrix, if I restarted my browser, it would bring back all my open tabs.
Now, it just goes to the start page. Does anyone know what setting is causing this.
Tried to DDG the issue but could not find anything.

Same version of UMatrix with W764. If I disable UMatrix all my tabs are their on restart. If enable it. nothing.

Update: I figured it out.

@M J Highlander (or anyone who might have an answer, actually)

I've been using the Block Content extension now and again (via the icon on the top bar). But I've come upon one web page that I can't prevent from blaring a super annoying video:
https://www.marketwatch.com/video/want-a-20-business-deduction-here-are-the-obstacles/3CB05210-036E-4FFF-AD91-7DA08EE6D06A.html

What setting would you recommend? (Turning off scripts takes all the page content away.)

This works pretty well for that: Autoplay Toggle (Non-Restartless) Adds a toolbar button which toggles both media.autoplay.enabled and media.autoplay.allowscripted, allowing you to to block or allow the automatic playing of media.

Indeed, that works!

For now, I'll use AutoPlay Toggle and Image Block 3.1 (unsure of its status, but it works) to have pretty good control over what I see.

My observation is that there are 3 distinctive types of incursions:
  • Advertisements
    Tracking
    Force-fed content (videos and images)
The fact that there's not a single blocker that can handle them all speaks to the complexity of the problem. For now, I'll settle for a combination of blocking tools that 1) produce the result I want and 2) are convenient to use (single-click operation).

Thanks for your help.
