"BlockSite" extension will not remove

Unread post by bawldiggle » 2017-09-18, 22:43

BlockSite by Wips.com (not "BlockSite Plus") cannot be Removed

After install BlockSite offers options to phone-home with URLs I visit or blacklist or both
- after testing it would not block cnet, nor any other domains I blacklisted :wtf:

Remove and restart PM does not uninstall BlockSite
Remove and OS reboot, does not uninstall BlockSite
Nor does a cold boot get rid of BS. . . . . . !

I have found the BlockSite XPI convenienty concealed as {dd3d7613-0246-469d-bc65-2a3cc1668adc} in my PM profile
Using FileSearchEX I found the XPI file and its contents in ...
C:\Users\<pc-name>\AppData\Roaming\Moonchild Productions\Pale Moon\Profiles\<my-profile>.default\extensions\
- searched for contents string "blocksite"
Would Revouninstaller PRO be enough to remove it, considering the registry entry {dd3d7613-0246-469d-bc65-2a3cc1668adc} is the pointer(?) to BlockSite ?
- or are there other processes I need to consider ?

Would appreciate any help :)

Deleting an extension that doesn't want to be deleted is well above my pay grade. I doubt an uninstaller would work cos its unlikely to be able to be fine tuned enough to recognise an extension over the host program.

So two obvious thoughts:

1) Disable blocksite, reboot PM and see if now it will uninstall
2) If not - back up your profile folder, delete the contents of the extension folder, uninstall PM with an uninstaller. Then reinstall and overwrite your profile folder with your back up. Sure, you lose all your extensions but it might be better than losing everything else. Personally i'd be tempted to simply reinstall from scratch and put it down to experience. Fresh browser, fresh profile, fresh performance. Save your passwords and bookmarks obv, but thats straightforward enough.

What you learn from this is to avoid wips. This site is fun: https://www.howtogeek.com/180175/warnin ... ng-on-you/ and there's more than one wips.

I tested blocksite on a fresh portable 32 bit install of PM on Win7Pro 64 bit. It installed fine, asked me if it could phone home, sulked when I said no and performed perfectly, blocking completely the 4 domains i asked it to block. It then uninstalled as easily as should be expected. Maybe the fact it won't uninstall for you suggests corruption or interference with other extensions, which leads to another obvious thought: will it uninstall in safe mode?

Close Pale Moon and delete the xpi from the extensions folder. Restart PM.

convenienty concealed as {dd3d7613-0246-469d-bc65-2a3cc1668adc}
That is not "conveniently concealed".
Most all extensions use their "guids" (if you will) rather then a "common name" when installed.
about:support should show a mapping between the two.

@ therube :)

These are my current extensions
I think I "get" your suggestion ... look-up the extn.name in troubleshooter to get the GUID ?
So simple ... why didn't I think of that
