uBlock Origin not updated...

Unread post by Bryn89 » 2024-12-10, 10:21

Since having Pale Moon since many years ago (2017 to be specific), uBlock Origin has never been updated since I installed it (version 1.13.8), the same time I got the browser (but primarily used it as a back-up, and still do to this day). However, its filters still get updated even custom ones.

I've no idea if the add-on isn't being updated anymore but, over at Firefox (my main browser), the current version of the add-on is 1.61.2 (and updated to it as of 27th November 2024).

The Firefox extensions no longer work in Pale Moon because Pale Moon is now a true fork of Firefox and not a clone. If you need uBlock Origin for Pale Moon then you can use the old version which is very old and I won't mention it or the newest UBO which can be found at the link below.

Keep in mind this is a "beta" and lots of people use it without any problems. The version is (1.16.6b1).

Use the one on the official Pale Moon Add-ons page - https://addons.palemoon.org/extensions/ ... -security/

It is version 1.16.6b1, last updated in April 2024.

@ LuftWafflePilot

The website belongs to the user on here named UCyborg. It has been around for awhile. He stepped up to maintain uBlock Origin since JustOff from Ukraine hasn't been heard from, from anywhere on the internet, for a couple of years now. JustOff was the original maintainer for legacy uBlock Origin for Pale Moon with his 1.16.4.30 version.

I am going to take a calculated guess and think JustOff may be deceased as a casualty of war when Russia invaded his country.

It's another site listing addons for PM. Not sure if UCyborg or someone else maintains it.

A simple "ublock" forum search (using the "topic titles only" option often helps) would have revealed yet another uBO option at your disposal.

Strictly speaking uBlock had no update featurewise since JustOff.

What AstroSkipper did were rather cosmetic modifications, not worth to be labeled as an update.
While UCyborgs's approach is promising, it is in such an early stage that it hardly can be considered an update (therefore it is labeled rightfully as "beta").

Bottom line, present uBlock is an excellent content blocker. What it lacks, are enhancements added by Raymond Hill over the years.

While feature-wise you are correct, remember that ad/content blockers exclusively rely on filterlists. So, I wouldn't class filterlists updates/adjustments as "cosmetic modifications, not worth to be labeled as an update".

The old JustOff version, comes with broken crucial filterlists (including anti-malware ones). Sure, they can be manually bypassed and fixed. But an unsuspected user wouldn't know. So, I would consider uBO updates even "mere" filterlist updates/link fixes/replacements etc.

A versatile content blocker does not rely exclusive on filter-lists.
BTW, wonder if you have any custom filter in your blocker in case you run one.

Something an average user can do on his own is IMO not worth to be labeled as update.
Besides sorry, my post wasn't addressed to sub-average users.

I've seen a helluva lot less labeled as an update.

Code: Select all

There's probably a ton of users who could track down new filter lists who just don't want to be bothered. Not everyone wants to spend time carefully manicuring their adblocker like some elaborate Japanese garden.

A versatile content blocker, also makes sure to include and constantly auto-update them, right upon launch.

Well, even if you don't consider average/sub-average users worthy of minor updates or whatever you want to call them, I doubt you can claim ad-blockers rely equally, or MORE on custom filters rather than well-curated, established, ready-made and constantly updated filterlists.

JustOff's version was/is perfectly fine for years, yet here we are doubting the existence of alternative new versions/modifications/efforts/whatever. That's all we have for now. If one wants/needs the very latest features of uBO, or other WebExtensions for that matter, they know where to find them. Who cares about filterlists, anyway?
