Palemoon 33.0.2 randomly freezes on macOS Catalina

Unread post by marigold » 2024-03-31, 18:08

Installed 33.0.2 recently, and I find it to be less performative than the previous versions. It randomly freezes for a second or 2 and displays the macOS colour-wheel - this happens when switching tabs, scrolling, opening a menu, typing here etc. This didn't happen with 33.0.0 or 33.0.1.

What information do can I share to help PM developers troubleshoot this?

I am not aware that there were many changes in 33.0.2 that would affect performance.

I also have not changed the build environment, I am still using Xcode 14 like I have been for at least the last year.

I am planning on trying to move to Xcode 15 for the next major version now that the new linker has had time to stabilize.

If 33.0.1 really does not have those issues for you, I'd suggest just going back to that version... I don't think there were any super serious issues addressed in the latest point release.

The macOS Activity Monitor showed high CPU usage for PM 33.0.2 but about:performance didn't suggest which addon or tab was responsible for it. So I did a complete wipe of all PaleMoon data, uninstalled it, restarted macOS and did a fresh install of PM 33.0.2 (with all my usual addons) and it now seems to work fine. CPU usage also is normal. Weird.
