Performance of Pale Moon on M1/M2 Macs?

Unread post by Eduardo Lucas » 2023-02-15, 07:44

I`m really sorry if it`s not appropriate for asking this here. But, how is the performance of Pale Moon 32 in the M1/M2 macs? Does anyone have these machines and can report in how PM performance in this kind of (very) high end hardware while using daily? (i see dbsoft has this experience but i would not like to bother a developer and take his scarce time away from code to a computer science topic)

I`m sure it flies on high end 3dcache AMD x86-64 (not bragging for the x86 architecture although i`m supportive of it), but how does it runs on particularly heavy google-only websites on Apple ARM? I have no idea (neither of the advantages or disadvantages) on how the architecture behaves differently on natively compiled complex software as web browsers.

Are you looking for benchmarks, or just general feel? The M1 Mac I do my builds on feels so incredibly fast. Even being a low end model it outperforms my desktop Ryzen machines in many things. Even running the Intel builds with Rosetta2 feels fast. The ARM builds everything feels instantaneous. I have not run any benchmarks on it, but I can... just not sure what you are asking for in this post?

It was mostly about the performance in daily web browsing and not benchmarks at all. Its great and pretty interesting to see everything is instantaneous in the native build and that the browser compiles so fast in Apple M1/M2. Thanks!

I have MacBook Pro with m1 pro processor mac, and the PM lags for me.
scrolling, quitting PM (it takes minutes sometimes), loading pages sometimes feels jerky.
memory usage goes to around 10 gigs of ram (with about 10-20 pages, maybe memory is not being freed)

I also have an M1 pro Macbook pro but haven't seen any performance problems. In fact, Pale Moon is faster on M1 than it seems on my i9, who would've thought!

When this starts happening, can you open a new tab and enter: "about:memory" in the URL bar. Click the "Measure and Save" and send me the log. Thanks!

Also are you using the ARM64 version on your M1? Or are you using the Intel version?

That is my experience as well, I was shocked. The MacBook Air I do my builds on often beats my desktop Ryzen PC.

will do!
Activity monitor shows kind: apple.
one more thing: on a clean install I coudln't launch native build (application is broken or smth like that), I had to either run the intel one or install xcode with rosetta.

Are you running the latest version? That broken type error means it failed to verify the signature/notarization and it marked it as quarantined. The latest version is the first version I have distributed notarized (code signed).

Code: Select all

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Pale\ Moon.app
In a Terminal.app window will remove the quarantine flag from Pale Moon.

This happened to me on 32.0.0 dunno if it persists on 32.1.0 (I don't have a clean install now)

Hmm, when resizing the browser screen on the M1 it is quite jittery and such. Also wish I could make the title bar less prominent. It sticks out quite a bit!

Interesting, it is not jittery at all for me… not sure what to do about the title bar, unless you want to use basilisk since that draws in the title bar making it less prominent.
