2 Questions on FreeBSD build Topic is solved

For contributed third party builds not necessarily configured like the main product.
e.g. AVX builds, SSE builds, Pandora builds.

2 Questions on FreeBSD build

Unread post by ron_1 » 2025-01-19, 21:16

Per the subject title:

1) I'm assuming the FreeBSD build is for AVX compatible processors only, like the Windows version. Is that correct?
2) Will the FreeBSD build run on GhostBSD, which is based on FreeBSD?

Thank you.

1: no idea

2: I wouldn't be surprised if it worked with both. GhostBSD is a fork of FreeBSD isn't it?

Its not like comparing FreeBSD with OpenBSD or something like that. I would think it would still work. But feel free to try.

I need to find out the answer to #1 first (although I think I already know the answer).

You could ask whomever does the FreeBSD builds.

But if I had to guess, AVX is required if its 64 bit.

SSE2 is required, not AVX. Initial x86_64 predates AVX by a lot.

He was talking about the build, not the architecture.

The current build shouldn't require AVX I don't think. I have not updated the build settings to coincide with the Windows AVX changes. I can if desired, but I personally don't find the AVX instruction support to be that beneficial.

This is right. I am typing this right now from a live session of GhostBSD on my non-AVX processor, and Pale Moon seems to be running fine.

Are you the FreeBSD for Pale Moon contributor?

Guess you can mark this as solved then. Good to know though! :)

Wonder if OpenBSD can get a port someday.

Please, don't relight that fire. Just in-case you aren't aware there are some fundamental differences in the opinions on projects using their own versions of libraries that have been carefully adjusted to work correctly/well with those projects and distributions (or in this case OS providers) that demand everything is vetted/audited by themselves before they will let it loose in their OS. There are arguments to be had for both sides but they are not mutually compatible and never the twain shall meet...

As for the main question I am happy to concur/confirm that the FreeBSD builds do not demand AVX/AVX2 - and indeed the installer (or at least the 3rd party contributed GNU/Linux `.deb` builds by Veit Kannegieser does a rather nice check to see if the version being installed is compatible with the processor it finds in use) - I run both OSes on my main Desktop which uses a rather ancient AMD phonom X4 processor {fair enough I did upgrade the processor from a 65W 1.8 GHz to a 95W 2.5 one - though a bigger heat-sink and better fan were also needed}.

Well that's fair I suppose. I guess it would require an OpenBSD dev to desire to add it to their system, etc... most likely it would be new moon being added tho.
