Pale Moon gtk3 AUR packages

Post by micwoj92 » 2025-11-14, 22:13

Hello all,
I haven't used Pale Moon in any capacity in quite some time now. I have also stopped updating palemoon-gtk3 and palemoon-gtk3-bin packages which I maintain(ed) on AUR.
If someone from this forum is interested in taking over, please feel free to drop your username here or in private message and I could give package to you.
Also open to any questions regarding packaging.
Otherwise I will push last update from my side and orphan them at the end of this month.

Am I right in assuming that the regular Pale Moon binary downloads will work on Arch?

Just checking - in case the AUR package gets orphaned to see if Arch users will still be able to use the browser without having to build it manually.

Yes, this has nothing to do with that. In fact `palemoon-gtk3-bin` just takes binary download and then makes sure right dependencies are installed and it is installed as a system package.
I did few quick searches on this forum, but could not find anything specific to my packages, only someone saying that using AUR causes "dependency issues", yet running into missing dependency issue without this "wrapper script" lol

This only matters if you installed it as pacman package. I feel like gtk3 variant isn't even that popular compared to (de facto default) gtk2.

I would agree with you, but I thought I read recently that Arch is planning to deprecate and/or EOL gtk2 in the near future. If it's EOL then gtk3 may soon be the only regular Arch option for running Pale Moon.

gtk2 is already EOL since 2020. On Arch "gtk2" package was dropped to AUR 3 weeks ago (2025-10-28). I don't think that this is a big problem, the toolkit is rather small and takes much less time to build than a browser. For example there are still packages for glib/gtk for handful old applications that still require it.

A bit late, but now they are up for grabs. I pushed last update and "reformatted" so that the diff against palemoon(-bin) packages is smallest.
