Whats the furture of Pale Moon?

Post by Ichijoe » 2014-08-29, 10:56

Ok lets be honest here... I doubt anyone here has even heard of you post Firefox v25, at least I haven't as Firefox hadn't yet given me sufficient need to go out looking for "A new Browser". Sadly this changed with Firefox v25, by removing the far superior Download Manager, and replacing it with a History & Bookmark thingy. WHY?!

Thankfully... and no less a thanks to you guys I was able to discover that Mozilla still had that last ounce of decency to release something called v24 ESR. (i.e. The Build that Pale Moon currently uses...)

Well sadly Mozilla are set to ditch support for 24ESR in just over a Month now (as I write this). I like... NO LOVE the 24ESR Build very much. The new 31ESR not so much. I hate Australis. If I wanted to run something ~chromey~ I'd just use Chrome!

So to get back to the topic at hand... Does THIS VERSION of Pale Moon still have a future? Or will it also go, come the 14th of October?

Needless to say there IS a reason why ~discovered~ your humm version, of Firefox. Not having yet known of their own ESR Release. (See above as to some of those "reasons"...) I'd love to see a direct fork of Firefox that continued to have proper support, but forgone us all the needless chromey eyecandy. That nobody asked for!

I'll have to stop you right there and correct a misconception: Pale Moon is not a rebuild or clone of Firefox 24 ESR. It forked off from Firefox 24 ESR (the ESR for the sake of ease regarding uplifted security updates more than anything else) because it was a good datapoint on the Mozilla timeline to work from (considering features and lack thereof in v25+). That doesn't mean the two are equal. Far from it ;)

Pale Moon will actually get a stronger presence come that time, because I think it'll be the only actively developed gecko browser left with the features and customizability found in pre-australis Firefox. So yes, there is most definitely a future for Pale Moon, and I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my concerns.
I look forward to shifting over to Pale Moon in the coming times ahead.
