Google is Mozilla's Meal-ticket

Unread post by ron_1 » 2013-11-23, 02:16

There are two interesting articles today (Nov 22) on gHacks. According to one, 90% of Mozilla's revenue comes from its deal with Google. The other states more than 80% of FF users are unhappy with Australis (i.e., only of those who responded/commented). I found them to be interesting reading, especially the one about Mozilla's revenue.

Over at Mozillazine, there are already 32 pages, as I type this post, of comments from Firefox users expressing their view on Australis in Nightly in the Firefox Builds forum.

One thing I noticed was there is, at least I think he is, a Firefox developer named Shorlander making comments about Australis and he's naturally defending the changes for Australis.

If he was making comments on the developer's blogs where developers delete negative comments and users who make them, there wouldn't be any negative comments. He can't do that on Mozillazine and this is why there are so many pages on Australis.

And then there's this kind of disconnected, head-in-the-cloud stuff that upper management likes to eat up, as the latest entry in the Mozilla UX blog.

Emotional Design? Since this "discussion" was in San Francisco, it fits perfectly. For those old enough, a take off on "Flower Power" from the late 60's which was basically the "directional movement" which was based in San Francisco. ;)

I guess their emotional design "stuff" fits perfectally for "a beautiful design" by the so called Firefox developers with regards to Australis which Mozilla is now "shoveling" to it's old Firefox user base which doesn't like Australis.

BTW, I didn't realize Mozilla's total revenue (80%) was so dependent on Google. No wonder Firefox Australis looks, acts and feels like Google Chrome. ;)
