For those of you who are massively confused by Mozilla’s versioning scheme that has been constantly changing and has become somewhat disjointed with the underlining gecko platform versioning. Despite the MARKETING decision to just make gecko versions the same as Firefox versions it seems insane that every Firefox version is a major platform upgrade.
In the below link I have compiled a spreadsheet of major Mozilla based programs including my own take on where we would be at given gecko’s version wasn’t co-oped by MozCo Marketing.

Re: Mozilla Gecko: Version, version, who’s got the version?
Slightly off topic so I hope it doesn't offend you.
I don't like how Mozilla does not advertise what version of Firefox is actually being offered on the Mozilla site anymore. I'll use the old Firefox v21.0 as an example.
When Firefox 21.0 came out, I knew about it since I know the inception dates because of the six week rapid release schedule even though on the Mozilla site, it doesn't give an inkling what version is being advertised. In order to really know what version of Firefox was being offered, I had to hover over the big green colored Firefox download button and in the extreme bottom left corner of my monitor, I could see what version was being offered.
But, when version 21.0.1 came along, I didn't know about it since it wasn't a "major" release. I was a week late getting it because when I hovered over the same green colored download button, it still read version 21.0 for Firefox. I only found out version 21.0.1 from the comments from other users on the Mozillazine forum. Without the comments on Mozillazine, the only other way for me to know what version of Firefox is being offered, I would have to click on the big green colored download button and look at the file number when the download file box pops up.
It's these type of changes and other changes to the Firefox browser intself which made me make Firefox my backup browser and Pale Moon my default browser. For me, these irritating changes started with version 12 of Firefox.

Well that spreadsheet I created. I am gonna try and maintain it. I know your frustration all too well. Maybe a release date column is a good idea. A color guide would be nice too
BTW How did you like my theoretical gecko/2+ versioning?
PS: My backup browser is Pale Moon v.last .. Also Seamonkey Suite (Which one day I will create a Navigator only version FOR NO RAISON!)

You may want to adjust your gecko versioning to indicate a larger version jump between 17 and 18 -- ion was introduced there.

BTW, I also have the SeaMonkey suite on both of my desktop computers and my wife's laptop, but I mainly now use it for the email client in it. The version of SM I have is an old one, 2.0.14 because this version was the last one to still use the "old" Download Manager and I didn't like the "new" Download Manager which started with the 2.1 version. Too many mouse clicks to do things (with cookies) whereas doing the same moves with the old download manager took less mouse clicks to accomplish the same thing.

Re: Mozilla Gecko: Version, version, who’s got the version?
Done.. Yeah, I know it's theoretical past gecko/2+ but thanks for the tip! The rest is important. Need to add Thunderbird, Sunbird/Lightning, and Chatzilla (lord knows why its an over-glorified extension that happens to have a xulrunner version as well)Moonchild wrote:You may want to adjust your gecko versioning to indicate a larger version jump between 17 and 18 -- ion was introduced there.
